Job summary

Orion Marine Group is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator to move construction materials and prepare job sites for wet utility installation. You will operate backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, trenchers, loaders, and related gasoline or diesel machinery.

The role requires 5+ years of hands-on experience with earth-moving equipment and the ability to work long shifts with occasional weekend hours. Safety and teamwork are core to our operations and daily tasks.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience operating earth-moving and construction equipment.
• Knowledge of wet utility installation, trenching, and grading preferred.
• Ability to read grade stakes, site plans, and project specifications.
• Work well in a team and communicate clearly with supervisors and crew.
• Physically able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform demanding tasks.

Job description

This position is accountable for operating machinery to move construction materials, excavate, grade, and prepare job sites for wet utility installation and maintenance. Equipment includes backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, trenchers, loaders, and other gasoline or diesel-powered machinery used in construction of water, sewer, and storm drainage systems.

The incumbent must have the ability and flexibility to work different shifts and long hours (8-12 hours). Weekend work and extra hours occur according to production needs and at the discretion of the Crew Supervisor.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

• Fastens attachments, buckets, blades, and other equipment components securely to machinery.
• Operates earth-moving and utility construction equipment safely and efficiently.
• Performs pre- and post-operation inspections to ensure equipment is functioning properly.
Performs routine maintenance such as greasing, fueling, cleaning, and basic repairs per manufacturer guidelines.
• Monitors gauges, indicators, and controls to maintain safe and effective equipment operation.
• Collaborates with crew members and supervisors to ensure accurate excavation, grading, and material placement.
• Assists with setting grades, slopes, and trenches to project specifications.
• Maintains equipment and tools to ensure long-lasting use and optimal performance.
• Reports malfunctioning equipment promptly to supervisors.
• Adheres to all safety protocols, company policies, and applicable regulations.
• Performse additional duties as assigned, including support to pipelayers or general labor tasks. .

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 5+ years of experience operating earth-moving and construction equipment is required. Knowledge of wet utility installation, trenching, and grading procedures is strongly preferred. In addition, the incumbent must:

• Ability to operate trackhoe , dozer, loader, compactor and skidsteer as needed on a wet utility crew
• Have the ability to read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, and project specifications.
• Work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with supervisors and crew members.
• Be able to work in constant change in weather and site conditions.
• Be able to lift, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and other similar activities as needed.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

This individual must also have the ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate and executive.

The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency arise .

In addition, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
