Job description

A position has been declared open in the Weber School District at West Haven Elementary for a Mild/Moderate Special Education Paraeducator. This position is for 5.75 hours per day, 180 days (9 months) per year. The pay is according to Lane 4B of the Paraprofessionals Salary Schedule. This position begins in the upcoming 2025-2026 school year (note start date).

Purpose Statement:

The job of Special Education Mild/Moderate Elementary Paraeducator is established to assist assigned teaching personnel in supervising and instructing special education students, perform classroom clerical tasks, and meet students' personal care and health needs. The role also involves developing students' academic, daily living, and behavioral skills.

Duties and Responsibilities (not exhaustive):
  1. Communicates with parents to schedule meetings and relay messages for special education teachers.
  2. Maintains students' files and records to document activities and provide reliable information.
  3. Monitors individual students in classrooms, school, and community settings to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  4. Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g., scheduling, copying) to support teachers and administrators.
  5. Adapts to changing work priorities, demonstrating tact, courtesy, and attentiveness to detail while meeting deadlines.
  6. Supports classroom work under the teacher's direction to reinforce lesson plans.
  7. Provides instruction and support to students in various settings, including special education classrooms, general education classrooms, and one-on-one situations.
  8. Provides accommodations for assessments, such as reading tests aloud, acting as a scribe, or supporting in alternate locations.
  9. Supports classroom teachers in collecting data.
  10. Assists other personnel as needed to support their work activities.
  11. Implements instructional behavioral programs under the teacher's supervision to enhance students' academic success.
  12. Assists with daily living skills, such as toileting, feeding, and personal hygiene, on an occasional basis.
  13. Performs additional duties as assigned by the building administrator or special education department for the benefit of students.
  14. Maintains regular attendance, which is critical.
Qualifications:
Basic Physical Requirements:
  1. Ability to assume and maintain various postures (kneeling, squatting, bending, standing, sitting in student chairs) for extended periods.
  2. Safely manage students who may be physically or verbally aggressive.
  3. Occasionally lift up to 60 lbs. to a height of 36 inches; frequently lift up to 25 lbs. to the same height.
  4. Get into and out of full-size 8-passenger vans.
  5. Sanitize and clean equipment and assistive devices.
  6. Remain calm and follow safety procedures during emergencies.
  7. Walk with students to bus stops in inclement weather and assist with public transportation training.
  8. Willing to participate in and utilize MANDT training.
  9. May work with bio-hazards (bloodborne pathogens, waste, disinfectants, etc.).
Experience/Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Post-secondary education preferred.
  • ParaPro Praxis required if at a Title I school.
  • Previous related experience preferred.
