The Health & Fitness Specialist supports the Director of Wellness & Programming in all aspects of health and fitness programing and services for the benefit of Plymouth Harbor residents and staff, as well as manage Wellness Department reservations and ensure proper sanitation practices throughout the Wellness Center.

Responsibilities

  • Must possess a sound knowledge base of exercise physiology principles and the ability to communicate verbally and in writing, these concepts to residents and staff one-on-one or in a group setting.
  • Accurately convey information concerning a resident’s condition to the Wellness Director.
  • Fitness Evaluations/Assessments
  • Conduct fitness assessments evaluate results and present findings to residents and staff if required.
  • Provide exercise prescriptions to residents and staff in accordance with current ACSM Guidelines or as established by the Wellness Director.
  • Conduct ongoing one-on-one personal training sessions with residents, assisting them in achieving health and wellness goals.

Group Fitness

  • Properly conduct a variety of group fitness classes to all ability levels while ensuring that the safety of the participants is not compromised.
  • Modify an exercise or movement to suit the individual or group needs; always cognizant to signs of over-exertion, fatigue, and physical difficulties and intervene as needed.
  • Cover for another instructor whether group fitness, fitness room floor, or any other Wellness areas needing assistance.
  • Conduct comprehensive equipment orientations to residents and staff at all levels of ability.
  • Provide daily assistance on the floor to residents and staff on the safe and proper use of equipment and monitor participants for proper form and safety.
  • Assist in maintaining the Wellness Center: equipment maintenance checks, promptly report any potentially unsafe conditions to the Wellness Director.
  • Actively participate on the Team member Wellness Committee.
  • Deliver services such as health screenings, educational programs, and other events (i.e., health fairs, teams, run/walk groups, etc.), as needed.
  • Managing Reservations
  • Manage reservation requests via phone and email for the following amenities that require reservations.
  • Serve as subject matter expert regarding online reservations via the resident portal.
  • Monitor daily reservations and enforce reservation guidelines among amenity areas.

Cleaning & Disinfection

  • Throughout the day, clean and disinfect all shared surfaces, equipment, machines, and common areas within the Wellness Center.

Administrative

  • Effectively organize and prioritize workload.
  • Act as supervisor in the absence of the Wellness Director.
  • Assist in training/education to contracted staff, as requested.
  • Possess a desire to develop knowledge base on various health issues and behavior change strategies for resident and staff.
  • Research wellness educational topics of interest and identify appropriate resident and/or staff educational materials, as requested.
  • Draft/create wellness articles for the resident and staff newsletters.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Wellness, Health Promotion, or related discipline required.
  • Certification as a personal trainer from an accredited organization.
  • Practical experience with an older population and their associated disease processes preferred. (may include internships)
  • Practical experience implementing wellness activities for the resident and staff population preferred. (may include internships)
  • Must have prior experience with reservations or primarily telephonic duties.
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Must be a detail-oriented person and able to perform duties with great accuracy on a daily basis.
  • Must have excellent personal skills, demonstrating the ability to conduct oneself in a non-controversial style; a style that inspires the respect of others and promotes a sense of trust in the individual’s competence.
  • Must have good communication skills, speaking, writing, and listening.
