General Function:

Under the supervision of the designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Wellness Coach will maintain equipment and surrounding areas, and engage and coach members. The Wellness Coach will work with all staff to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members, guests, and staff, ensuring the highest quality service.

Qualifications:
  1. Minimum of 18 years of age.
  2. Minimum of 6 months experience in the wellness field (Grade III requirement). Up to 2 years college-level exercise science or 2 years in the fitness field (Grade IV requirement).
  3. Must obtain YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles and Foundations of Strength and Conditioning certifications within first 6 months of employment.
  4. Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 60 days of hire.
  5. Complete and maintain required trainings: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment.
  6. Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.
Essential Functions:
  1. Support the mission, vision, and goals of the YMCA.
  2. Promote a professional, values-based culture grounded in caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  3. Lead initiatives to strengthen community through programs focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  4. Supervise the wellness area.
  5. Engage YMCA members through coaching on wellness activities.
  6. Provide member training, orientations, and evaluations as scheduled.
  7. Conduct and document daily, weekly, and monthly equipment checks.
  8. Perform daily cleaning in the wellness area and follow documentation procedures.
  9. Input maintenance requests into association maintenance software.
  10. Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  11. Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.
  12. Act as a leader in emergency situations and report incidents according to the Emergency Communication Action Plan.
  13. Follow Association standards.
  14. Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Wellness Department and center operations to ensure an excellent member experience.
Skills and Ability Requirements:
  1. Respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.
  2. Properly prepare, choreograph, and teach required classes.
  3. Meet physical requirements, including walking, standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods.
  4. Hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  5. Communicate verbally, projecting voice across distances and in loud situations.
