Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a skilled welder to join our team in a role requiring fusion welding of ferrous and non-ferrous metals across multiple plants.

You will plan welding sequences, set up operations from blueprints, and weld in various positions while maintaining quality and safety standards. Ideal candidates have 3+ years of GTAW experience (2G/3G) in production, can read digital prints, and are available for 1st or 2nd shifts.

Qualifications

• Must pass multiple welder qualification tests.
• Minimum 3 years GTAW 2G and 3G experience in a production environment.
• Available to work 2nd and 1st shift.
• Ability to perform simple computer operations, work from digital prints.

Responsibilities

• Plan sequences of welding operations and determine methods of welding using gas, GTAW, heli-arc, orbital, sigma and submerged arc welding.
• Perform setup for welding operations from blueprints or drawings.
• Weld materials to prevent leaks and cracks under high pressure or stress.
• Weld flat, vertical or overhead positions and in hard-to-reach areas.
• Pre-heat materials and minimize warpage through proper weld location and stress relief.
• Form and shape details as required.
• Improvise welding aids such as templates and holding devices.
• Prepare surfaces by cleaning, grinding, polishing and some assembly.
• Clean and dress welds and repair unacceptable joints.
• Check own work for conformance to specs.
• Maintain required certifications and use journeyman tools.
• Climb and weld from ladders, scaffolds, roofs and pits.
• Maintain good shop practices.

About the Role:

This occupation requires the use of all available welding processes to fusion weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals to meet the welding requirements and to perform all of the work requirements in all departments of the Solar plants.

What You Will Do:

• Plan sequences of welding operations and determine methods of welding to weld structural details and assemblies, using all available welding processes such as gas, electric arc, (GTAW), heli-arc, orbital, sigma and submerged arc welding
• Perform setup incidental for welding operations, working from blueprints, sketches, other authorized documents and/or oral instructions
• Weld any gauge materials where welded areas are subject to high pressure or extreme stress and where care must be taken to prevent leaks and cracks
• Weld flat, vertical or overhead areas, or in difficult positions and areas difficult of access
• Recognize need for and pre-heat materials as necessary and minimize warpage by proper location of weld and stress relieving methods
• Form and shape details, as required
• Improvise welding aids such as paper templates, locating devices, holding blocks, etc.
• Perform surface preparation of parts such as cleaning, sanding, grinding, polishing and some assembly of parts
• Clean and dress welds including the cutting and repairing of unacceptable weld joints
• Check own work for conformance to specifications
• Must pass and maintain required certifications
• Use all necessary equipment, tools and materials required to perform work as a journeyman
• Must be able to climb and weld from ladders, scaffolds roofs, and in pits
• Maintain good shop practices

What You Have:

• Must be able to pass multiple welder qualification tests
• Minimum of three (3) years GTAW 2G and 3G experience in a production environment
• Available to work 2nd and 1st shift
• Ability to perform simple computer operations, work from digital prints

Desired Qualifications:

• Three (3) to five (5) years of GTAW welding experience
• Experience welding with precision fixturing
• Ability to work overtime as needed

Summary Pay Range:

$34.54 - $51.82
