Job summary

Meyer Utility Structures in Lancaster, SC seeks a Plant Welding Technician to support the pole manufacturing plant with welding and technical support, troubleshooting, and process improvements. You will ensure procedure conformance and perform training for FCAW, SAW, SMAW processes on the shop floor and in classrooms.

Responsibilities include welding training, evaluating procedures, maintaining records, and supporting internal improvement projects within a multi-shift plant environment.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years FCAW, SAW, SMAW welding experience.
• Able to read and comprehend welding symbols, welding procedure specifications, drawings, BOMs.
• Welding related associate degree preferred.
• AWS D1.1 knowledge and filler/base materials knowledge.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Regular and predictable attendance and teamwork.

Job description

Meyer Utility Structures (MUS)is searching for aPlant Welding Technician. In this role, you will provide the Lancaster, SC utility pole manufacturing plant with welding and technical support such as welding process troubleshooting, welding process improvement, and procedure and code conformance. The Plant Welding Technician will have strong hands‑on welding skills, visual weld inspection experience, and experience using welding procedure specifications.

What You'll Do

• As the welding subject matter expert, provide welding support to production welders, supervisors, and other plant personnel.
• Troubleshoot welding technique and routine equipment issues
• Perform routine tasks such as maintain welder continuity, welding equipment calibration, and flux oven logs.
• Evaluate, propose, and implement welding process improvements to increase welding efficiency and quality
• Perform welding training on the shop floor and in a classroom setting as required
• Assist in qualifying welding procedure specifications as required
• Participate in internal improvement teams/other duties as required
• Oversee the daily pole school operations
• Maintain welder candidate training, testing and qualification records
• Perform hands on welder candidate training for the FCAW, SAW, SMAW, plasma/oxyfuel cutting, and air-carbon-arc gouging processes
• Conduct classroom training on welding safety, welding and cutting processes, visual weld acceptance criteria, welding symbols, drawings, etc
• Perform hands on, pole layout and fit up training
• Provide additional training (OJT) to production welders as required
• Assist in qualifying welding procedure specifications as required
• Participate in welding improvement projects/other duties as required

What You’ll Need

• Must be able to work 9:00pm – 7:00am, Monday – Thursday or 7:00pm- 7:00am, Friday-Sunday.
• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and/or AWS Certified Welding Educator (CWE) desired.
• 3 - 5 years FCAW, SAW, and SMAW welding experience.
• Proficient using various weld inspection tools such as amp/volt/wire feed/gas flow meters, fillet weld gages, undercut gages, etc.
• Welding related associate degree desired.
• Able to read and comprehend welding symbols, welding procedure specifications, work instructions, drawings, bill of materials, etc.
• Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 welding procedure specification.
• Working knowledge of weld filler materials and base materials.
• Possess written and oral communication skills.
• Regular and predictable attendance, a great attitude, and an ability to work well with a team towards achieving a common goal

Working Conditions

• Work environment includes production and non-production areas and plant grounds which operate 3 shifts and frequent weekend shifts
• This position may require coverage beyond the normal hours, shift, and on weekends/holidays
• Both high and low temperatures, loud noises typical of a manufacturing plant
