Welding Process Engineer

Location: Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire

Relocation Assistance: Available

Schedule: 1st Shift

Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Welding Process Engineer to join a well-established marine manufacturing organization in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This is a highly technical, hands‑on engineering role for someone with a background in shipbuilding or boatbuilding who understands how welding impacts the overall vessel — including structural integrity, quality, production schedules, cost, and downstream manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate will serve as a subject matter expert for welding processes across both aluminum and steel vessel construction. We are looking for a big‑picture technical problem solver who can investigate complex welding issues, determine root causes, and implement sustainable process improvements rather than simply correcting individual defects. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a technical resource for steel and aluminum welding processes throughout vessel construction.
  • Investigate welding issues including distortion, cracking, weld defects, excessive rework, and productivity constraints.
  • Perform root cause analysis and develop corrective actions that prevent recurring welding problems.
  • Analyze heat input, welding parameters, filler materials, base metals, joint design, fixturing, and weld sequencing.
  • Develop and improve welding processes to increase quality, productivity, repeatability, and first-pass yield.
  • Develop and qualify Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Evaluate welding sequences and their impact on vessel structure, distortion, production flow, and downstream operations.
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate welding automation, robotics, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Partner with welders, Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, and Inspection teams to resolve production challenges.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to welders on procedures, processes, and new technologies.
  • Support weld inspections and coordinate NDT activities as needed.
  • Evaluate new welding equipment, tooling, consumables, materials, and technologies.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on welding quality, labor efficiency, cost reduction, and throughput.
  • Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and new vessel/product introduction initiatives.
  • Maintain process documentation, standard work instructions, and process control plans.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) certification.
  • Professional experience within shipbuilding or boatbuilding.
  • Strong experience with both aluminum and steel welding.
  • Strong understanding of welding processes, metallurgy, heat-affected zones, distortion, weld defects, and welded joint performance.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and corrective action for welding‑related manufacturing issues.
  • Knowledge of welding procedures, specifications, qualification requirements, and quality standards.
  • Ability to work hands‑on in a shipyard/manufacturing environment and collaborate directly with production personnel.
Preferred Experience
  • Knowledge of ABS Rules for Materials and Welding.
  • Familiarity with AWS D1.1 – Structural Welding Code: Steel and AWS D1.2 – Structural Welding Code: Aluminum.
  • Welding automation and/or robotic welding experience.
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement experience.
  • CAD and/or manufacturing process simulation experience.
  • Experience with digital weld monitoring or traceability technologies.
What We’re Looking For

We are especially interested in someone who approaches welding problems from an engineering and process perspective. When a welding issue occurs, you should be comfortable determining not only what went wrong, but why it happened, how it affects the larger vessel and production process, and what changes need to be made to prevent it from happening again. This is an excellent opportunity for a Welding Engineer who enjoys being close to the manufacturing floor, solving complex technical problems, and having a direct impact on the quality and efficiency of vessel construction. Qualified candidates located outside Wisconsin are encouraged to apply. Relocation assistance is available.
