Job description

The Welding Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, optimizing, and maintaining welding processes used in manufacturing operations. This position provides technical expertise and hands-on support to production, quality, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure welding operations meet applicable codes, customer requirements, quality standards, and production objectives.

The Welding Engineer will evaluate welding processes, troubleshoot welding and fabrication issues, develop and maintain welding procedures, support welder qualifications, and identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost. The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, welding codes and standards, and manufacturing practices.

WELDING ENGINEERING & PROCESS DEVELOPMENT
  • Develop, implement, and optimize welding processes for production applications.
  • Select appropriate welding processes, equipment, consumables, materials, and techniques based on product and production requirements.
  • Develop welding parameters, specifications, and process controls.
  • Evaluate new welding technologies, equipment, and consumables to improve manufacturing performance.
  • Establish and maintain welding procedures and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with the development and qualification of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
  • Support welder performance qualifications and maintain qualification records.
  • Provide technical guidance to welders, supervisors, quality personnel, and other manufacturing employees.
PRODUCTION SUPPORT & TROUBLESHOOTING
  • Provide day-to-day technical support to manufacturing operations.
  • Troubleshoot welding defects, equipment issues, dimensional problems, distortion, cracking, porosity, lack of fusion, and other welding-related concerns.
  • Investigate root causes of welding and fabrication problems and implement corrective actions.
  • Work closely with Production and Quality to resolve nonconformances and prevent recurrence.
  • Assist in resolving production problems while minimizing downtime and scrap.
  • Monitor welding processes and identify opportunities for improved efficiency, throughput, and consistency.
QUALITY & COMPLIANCE
  • Ensure welding processes comply with applicable industry standards, customer specifications, and company requirements.
  • Interpret and apply applicable welding codes and standards, such as AWS, ASME, API, or other standards as required.
  • Work with Quality to establish inspection requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Participate in internal and external audits related to welding processes.
  • Assist with nonconformance investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate technical records, procedures, qualifications, and process documentation.
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
  • Identify and implement opportunities to reduce welding costs, labor, scrap, rework, and consumable usage.
  • Utilize Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, root-cause analysis, and other continuous improvement methodologies as appropriate.
  • Conduct process studies and evaluate welding cycle times and production efficiency.
  • Assist with automation and robotic welding initiatives where applicable.
  • Develop and implement standardized welding processes and work instructions.
  • Support capital equipment projects involving welding equipment and manufacturing processes.
SAFETY
  • Promote safe welding and fabrication practices throughout the manufacturing facility.
  • Work with Safety and Operations to identify and address welding-related hazards.
  • Ensure welding processes are designed and operated in accordance with applicable safety requirements.
  • Support training and communication regarding safe welding practices, equipment operation, and process requirements.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work collaboratively with Engineering, Production, Quality, Maintenance, Purchasing, and Management.
  • Assist with estimating welding labor, materials, consumables, and production requirements.
  • Provide technical support for new product introductions and manufacturing changes.
  • Participate in equipment installation, commissioning, and process validation.
  • Maintain current knowledge of welding technology, materials, codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education, welding experience, and technical training may be considered.

Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in welding engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related industrial manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Hands‑on experience with welding processes and production environments required.
  • Experience with welding inspection, quality systems, and welding codes preferred.
  • Experience troubleshooting welding processes and defects.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Strong knowledge of welding processes such as SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, SAW, or other applicable processes.
  • Understanding of welding metallurgy, materials, heat input, preheat/interpass temperatures, and weld distortion.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Knowledge of welding codes and standards, including AWS, ASME, API, or applicable customer specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to perform root‑cause analysis and develop effective corrective actions.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and production environments.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to both engineering and production personnel.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and engineering/manufacturing software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hands‑on manufacturing environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certified Welding Engineer (CWE) or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • American Welding Society (AWS) certification or other relevant professional certification.
  • Experience with robotic or automated welding systems.
  • Experience with welding procedure qualification and welder performance qualification.
  • Experience with ASME Section IX.
  • Experience with API welding requirements.
  • Experience with carbon steel, stainless steel, and/or alloy steel fabrication.
  • Experience with continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with welding equipment selection, installation, and commissioning.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing plant environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, climb, kneel, and work in confined or difficult‑to‑access areas.
  • Ability to safely inspect welding operations and equipment on the production floor.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials or equipment as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Welding Engineer will spend time in both an office and manufacturing environment. The position may be exposed to welding fumes, noise, heat, dust, moving equipment, and other typical manufacturing hazards. Appropriate PPE and safety procedures must be followed at all times.
