Job summary

Portland Community College (PCC) seeks a welding instructional support specialist for the Swan Island Training Center at Vigor Shipyard. This 0.8 FTE role supports students in safe welding practices, sets up labs, and assists with assessments.

The position emphasizes equipment maintenance, safety protocols, and coordination of staff and student workers. The role requires lifting up to 50 lbs and collaboration with vendors and faculty.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; two years of post-secondary education in a technical discipline relevant to instructional support.
• Three years welding or related industrial manufacturing experience; substitute with education on a year-for-year basis.
• Proven written and oral communication skills to assist students.
• Ability to lead others and evaluate performance.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs in the work environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide instructional support to students through safe use of welding equipment, tools, materials, and lab resources.
• Set up and support laboratory activities, monitor student progress, assist with instruction and assessments.
• Train and orient students and staff on lab procedures, PPE, and safety.
• Maintain lab records, inventories, and operational procedures.
• Procure supplies, equipment, and instructional materials; track expenditures and coordinate with vendors.
• Maintain welding labs, troubleshoot equipment issues, coordinate repairs, and manage checkout of tools.
