Job summary

Construction Material Testing in Utah seeks a Welding Inspector I who works under a Certified Welding Inspector on structural steel and pipe welding, verifying fit-up, joint preparation, and WPS compliance; performs visual inspections per AWS D1.1 or governing code. The seat is built for an AWS CAWI, or an experienced welder or inspector on the CWI path, with the company sponsoring the exam.

Pay ranges from $28 to $36 per hour, with travel and per diem as needed.

Qualifications

AWS CAWI certification or 3+ years welding/inspection experience and eligibility for the CWI exam.
Reads structural drawings, weld symbols, and WPS/PQR documents.
Physically able to work at height, in confined spaces, and on active erection sites.
Careful, consistent, and honest about weld appearance.

Responsibilities

Verify joint fit-up, preheat, and WPS compliance before and during welding.
Perform visual weld inspection under supervision to AWS D1.1, D1.5, or governing code.
Confirm welder qualifications, consumable control, and equipment calibration records.
Maintain weld maps, inspection logs, and daily reports.
Flag rejectable indications for CWI disposition.
Coordinate NDT (UT, MT, PT) with the NDT technician and record results.
