Job summary

DSJ Global's client in Chicago is seeking a Welding Engineer II to lead welding and fabrication initiatives within a manufacturing environment. You will drive projects from concept to implementation, partnering with production, quality, and engineering teams to deliver measurable improvements.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or related field, with at least 3 years' experience in welding fabrication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in welding fabrication or manufacturing engineering.
  • Knowledge of GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), Resistance Spot Welding (RSW), Stud Welding.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support welding fabrication projects focused on safety, quality, productivity, and cost reduction.
  • Develop and qualify welding procedures using visual inspection, NDT, and destructive testing.
  • Create and maintain welding documentation including: Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Quality control documentation, Work instructions, Process standards.
  • Set up, program, and optimize automated welding equipment, including robotic welding systems.
  • Support welding automation through robotic programming and process improvements.
  • Update routings, BOMs, engineering drawings, and machine programs.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis and continuous improvement activities using structured problem‑solving methodologies.
  • Drive Lean Manufacturing initiatives, including 5S, workflow optimization, and waste reduction.
  • Evaluate and implement new welding technologies, equipment, and capital improvement projects.
  • Provide technical support to production teams and resolve day‑to‑day manufacturing challenges.
  • Collaborate effectively with operations, quality, engineering, and leadership teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Communicate project status, results, and recommendations to stakeholders across the organization.

Our client is seeking a Welding Engineer II to support and lead welding and fabrication initiatives within a manufacturing environment. This role is ideal for a self-motivated engineer with a strong background in welding processes, automation, continuous improvement, and project execution. The successful candidate will drive welding-related projects from concept through implementation while partnering closely with production, quality, and engineering teams.

Position Responsibilities

Welding Engineer II

  • Lead and support welding fabrication projects focused on safety, quality, productivity, and cost reduction.
  • Develop and qualify welding procedures using visual inspection, NDT, and destructive testing methods.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in welding fabrication, welding engineering, or manufacturing engineering.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • GMAW (MIG)
    • GTAW (TIG)
    • Resistance Spot Welding (RSW)
    • Stud Welding
  • Experience developing and qualifying welding procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T.
  • Working knowledge of welding equipment, tooling, fixtures, and fabrication processes.
  • Experience supporting automated or robotic welding applications.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng)
  • Experience with robotic welding platforms and offline programming software.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Excel for operational data analysis and reporting.
  • Familiarity with CAD software and tooling design.
  • Experience supporting capital equipment projects from evaluation through implementation.
