Position Summary

Perform various welding processes to repair, modify, and install pipes, structures, foundations, and fittings associated with shipboard hydraulic, pneumatic, and water systems. Select proper materials and requirements to perform welding functions. Fabricate and install fixtures and jigs required for welding process alignments. The role involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping or bending, and possible work in overhead structures, confined spaces, or beneath machinery. Strict adherence to safety, quality standards, good housekeeping habits, high-level critical thinking/reading comprehension, and willingness to travel/overtime are required.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Require limited supervision/oversight. Be familiar with trade qualifications and perform most tasks required as a Welder.
  2. Understand and perform basic setup, adjustment, and operation of various welding equipment and hand tools.
  3. Select welding filler material, joint design, and proper heat ranges as directed by Technical Work Documents.
  4. Read and understand basic terminology, blueprints, drawings, and schematics to plan installation, modification, or repair prior to commencing work.
Qualifications
  • High School/GED with Apprenticeship Diploma and additional vocational courses or technical school graduate; or military/civilian experience in welding operations in repair departments, shipyards, or fabrication shops.
  • Ability to obtain government base access.
  • Knowledge and practical skills tests required.
  • Qualify as a Welder/Workmanship Inspector per OII Process Instructions and welding procedures.
  • Deep Submergence Systems (SOC MCD A, B, and C), SUBSAFE Qualification, automated welding processes.
  • Ability to obtain Secret/Confidential security clearance.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, not dual nationality.

Working Conditions

This position is considered SHOP/INDOORS, characterized by:

  • Primarily indoors during day and occasionally at night
  • Frequent work on or near moving and vibrating equipment
  • Outdoor humidity often above 90%
  • Noise levels over 85 decibels
  • Intense/glare lighting conditions
  • Occasional exposure to open flames, sparks, dust, fumes, gases
  • Work in very hot or cold temperatures
  • Close physical proximity to others
  • Indoor non-controlled environmental conditions
Physical Activity/Requirements

The physical demands are representative of those needed to perform essential functions. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.

This role is classified as MEDIUM work, with occasional lifting of 20-50 pounds, working in confined spaces, and performing tasks like climbing, stooping, reaching, and operating machinery. Frequent lifting involves 10-25 pounds, and constant tasks include lifting up to 10 pounds and wearing PPE.
