Job summary

Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, is looking for a skilled welder in Muncie, Indiana to join our locomotive assembly team. You will perform welding on locomotive parts, follow prints and instructions, and ensure weld quality across multiple positions.

The role requires GMAW/SMAW welding skills, blueprint literacy, and the ability to work with heavy equipment and safety-focused processes. Relevant welding certification is preferred, with site-based responsibilities and opportunities for

Qualifications

  • GMAW and SMAW all-position welding skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints/weld symbols.
  • Familiar with use of industrial equipment (gas cutting, grinders, mechanical tools).
  • Problem solving skills and solid mathematical abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Weld locomotive parts and heavy plate components, including under frame structures and end plates.
  • Perform single- and multi-pass welds in all positions.
  • Repair welds using grinders, torches, gouging equipment.
  • Ensure weld parameters are programmed and met.
  • Fit, weld, and air test parts; operate cranes as needed.
  • Read weld references and assembly instructions; participate in continuous improvement.

Key Job Elements

  • Familiar with use of industrial equipment (gas cutting, hand grinders, mechanical tools);
  • Problem solving skills;
