Position Information

TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division is looking for a Welder I or II based in San Angelo, TX.

At TxDOT we supply the diagnostic, hand, and power tools you need to get the job done, so you will not be required to provide your own tools.

This position may be eligible for a recruitment bonus of up to $5,000 for a selected candidate who is currently not employed by The Texas Department of Transportation.

We offer company-sponsored Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training with $0 upfront monetary commitment. Earn your full salary while training with lodging, transportation and per-diem provided if necessary.

This position is for one FOD Welder I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Performs a variety of welding techniques to fabricate, assemble, install, and repair metal and other weldable materials in the Fleet Operations Division Shop. May perform some design work. Employees at this level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

  • Calculates project material and labor requirements.
  • Welds, solders, and brazes metal components, equipment, and/or structures.
  • Interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams, and schematics to determine appropriate welding method and equipment.
  • Inspects completed welds for compliance with specifications.
  • Sets up and operates welding and metal fabricating machines and equipment.
  • May order stock and assists with inventory of welding supplies.
  • Cleans, services, and maintains welding equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

All of the above, and:

  • Coordinates and orders stock and maintains inventory of welding supplies.
  • Trains less experienced welders.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

Welder I: 1 year of experience in Welding, metal fabrication, sheet metal work, or related experience.

Welder II: 3 years of experience in Welding, metal fabrication, sheet metal work, or related experience.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Certified or American Welding Society (AWS) Certified, or an equivalent is preferred.
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
  • Materials design, specifications and applications
  • The methods, materials and metals used in welding and metal fabrication
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps
  • Maintaining a safe working environment
  • Using a variety of welding equipment and techniques
  • Follow verbal and written instructions

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment forsafetyimpactpositions.This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
    • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
  • Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
