Job summary

S&P Fabrication Services in Costa Mesa, California is seeking a Welder Fitter to lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components for structural and miscellaneous metals. The ideal candidate must be strong at reading drawings to keep welders busy and should have current welding certifications.

This role requires working on elevated surfaces, ability to lift up to 40 pounds, and experience with MIG and TIG welding. A high school diploma or GED is necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Lays out, positions, and secures parts according to specifications.
  • Tack-welds or welds components using various equipment.
  • Cuts workpiece using powered saws or hand tools.
  • Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances with precision instruments.
  • Removes rough spots from workpiece with grinders or files.
  • Welds components in various positions.
  • Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts using hand tools.
  • Ignites torch and adjusts for desired flame or arc.
  • Analyzes engineering drawings to plan operations.
  • Develops templates to hold and align parts.
  • Determines equipment and welding method based on metallurgy and geometry.

Job Summary:

The Welder Fitter will lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural and misc. metals, such as beams, columns, stairs railings etc. Will be required to layout enough to keep several welders busy. Must be very strong at reading drawings and transferring that information to the layout table.


Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler.
  • Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.
  • Cuts workpiece, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife.
  • Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Removes rough spots from workpiece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper.
  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment.
  • Ignites torch and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.
  • Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.
  • Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Thorough understanding of machines and tools used in welding including designs, uses, maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Excellent understanding of design techniques, principles, and tools necessary for the precise production of technical plans, drawings, models and blueprints.
  • Basic ability to read and listen to assignments given in a variety of forms.
  • Fundamental understanding of mathematics as related to welding assignments.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Current welding certifications
  • Skill and experience with MIG welding and TIG welding preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have a background in steel manufacturing or metal fabrication.
  • LA City Weld Card Preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to weld components that are vertical, flat, or overhead.
  • Ability to work in a standing position for extended hours.
  • Comfortable with working on elevated surfaces.
  • Resilient to working in adverse climatic conditions.
  • Must have enough manual dexterity and stability as required for precision work.
  • Must be able to see details at close range.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to traverse facilities and machinery by climbing, balancing, lifting, walking, stooping, and carrying materials.
