Job summary

Kratos Defense and Security Solutions is seeking a skilled welder to join the shop floor. You will perform GTAW and GMAW welding and Oxy-Fuel cutting, including welding aluminum thin gauge, and must pass AWS/Military tests.

Responsibilities include reading blueprints and symbols, selecting parameters, and fabricating with fixtures. The role requires crane operation familiarity and adherence to safety standards.

Qualifications

• Must read prints and welding symbols.
• Proficient in GTAW (Tig) and GMAW (Mig); may require Oxy-Fuel welding for senior roles.
• Must pass welding tests per AWS codes and Military Standards.

Responsibilities

• Ingest instructions from job cards or prints; prepare materials.
• Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
• Assist with welding fixtures and layouts; design layouts for senior roles.
• Select welding parameters and filler metals for aluminum, steel, stainless steel.
• Perform tack welding and heating/cutting with oxy-fuel torch; clean welds as needed.
• Inspect finished welds and verify with gauges; operate welding equipment and plasma cutter.
• Support design/debug of new fixtures and welding procedure specifications (WPS).
• Maintain a clean, safe work area and operate overhead cranes.

Job description

General Job Summary

To join metals using GTAW and GMAW (Mig) welding processes and to cut metals using Oxy‑Fuel cutting torch or plasma Arc cutting equipment. Must be proficient in welding thin gauge aluminum with the GTAW (Tig) and GMAW (Mig) processes and must pass various welding tests per AWS welding codes and Military Standards and Specifications.

Essential Job Functions

• Receives instructions verbally or from job cards and/or detailed prints.
• May be required to perform up to three types of welding processes, including GMAW & GTAW, per various AWS and Military Codes and Specifications; more senior‑level positions may also require the ability to Oxy‑Fuel weld.
• Must be able to read and understand blueprints (drawings) and associated welding symbols.
• Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
• Assists with and/or constructs welding jigs and fixtures; some layout required. More senior‑level positions include designing the layout.
• Selects proper welding parameters and electrodes/filler metals for the particular type of metal to be welded, which may include ferrous and non‑ferrous metals (i.e., aluminum, steel, stainless steel).
• Performs tack welding and Oxygen/Fuel torch for heating and cutting.
• Chips, grinds, and cleans welds as necessary.
• Performs other tasks associated with welding, such as joining preparation, clamping, measurement verification, inspection of completed welds, and providing a count of finished pieces.
• To check work, use test equipment (i.e., fixed gauges, fillet weld gauges, pressure gauges).
• Senior‑level position aids in designing and debugging new welding fixtures; assists in establishing and qualifying welding procedure specifications (WPS).
• Uses various tools and machines, including GMAW, GTAW welding equipment, automatic welding gun, plasma cutter, oxygen/fuel torch, various grinding apparatuses, and other tooling and equipment as needed.
• Safely operates overhead cranes and hoists.
• Maintains a clean and safe work area.
• Other duties may be assigned.

• Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by government standards.

• Ability to accurately read tape measure; convert between fractions and decimals.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 2+ years minimum related experience.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• Shop floor environment.
• Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time.
• Ability to perform repetitive motion (rotating wrists, keyboarding, using small/large tools).
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to tolerate constant noise (i.e., machine motors).
• Ability to pass a Pulmonary Function Test.
• Ability to follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
