The Welder performs a variety of duties and utilizes multiple skillsets. Welders are required to follow detailed instructions and drawings carefully, have basic mechanical knowledge, manual dexterity, good eyesight and the ability to perform repetitive tasks. Technicians are primarily responsible for various types of weld preparation, welding and fabrication of weldments, including cutting, grinding and finish welding operations.
Main Responsibilities
- Perform preliminary damage and corrosion assessment on equipment to be serviced.
- Perform welding tasks on service equipment as a certified welder in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) and plasma cutting and oxyacetylene.
- Perform fabricating, repair and maintenance on equipment to be serviced.
- Determine layout and weld parts and assemblies according to engineering drawing and specifications.
- Identify and advise supervisor regarding problems within technical areas as required.
- Must meet certification requirements and perform scope of work in accordance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications and procedures.
- Build and maintain a healthy and safe work environment.
- Ensure that the overhead crane is used in a safe manner.
- Perform pre and/or post operation and safety checks of equipment.
- Must be at work on time and maintain good attendance. This is a condition of employment and is an essential function of the job.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Secondary Responsibilities
- When not engaged in weld-related activities will support mission needs as a mechanic.
- Develop and maintain a regular cleaning schedule to ensure the shop is kept tidy and well organized upon completion of work assignments.
- Ensure racking is kept in an order that work orders are easily accessible.
- Attend toolbox meeting prior to shift.
Attributes and Skills
- Ability to use welding and fabrication tools.
- Able to read and interpret blueprints and diagrams.
- Ability to do some mechanical work.
- Perform DOT inspections on trailers.
- Mathematics - Using mathematics to solve problems. The minimum math ability usually associated with this classification is the ability to calculate surfaces, volumes, angles, weights and measure. You must be able to use variables and formulas which are normally found in most industry approved trade books.
- Quality assurance and control.
- Required to certify on various metals and alloys.
- Required to obtain an overhead crane and forklift license.
- Must be able to obtain three (4) welding certifications (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead).
- Good communication with co-workers in a collaborative team environment.
- Able to work autonomously and use good decision-making practices and critical thinking.
- Good vision (glasses are acceptable) with eye-hand coordination.
- Strong attention to detail and patience.
- Ability to lift 50lbs.
Qualifications
- Candidate should have a minimum of 3-years experience welding heavy plate on trailers or heavy equipment.
- Certificate in welding and metals fabrication preferred. WABO or AWS-preferred but not required.
- Have a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently when needed but can also work with a team.
- Valid crane and forklift training and asset.
- Must be quick to learn new skills.
Physical Requirements
- Physically fit and able to lift up to 50 lbs - fitness test required.
- Standing on your feet for a long period of time.
- Have good eye to hand coordination.
- Be able to bend, crouch and kneel for extended periods.
- Ability to wear personal protective gear.
- Casual work clothes that meet safety requirements (Coveralls provided), PPE required (Steel Toe Boots, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection).
Shift Availability
- Days - Monday – Friday 7:30am – 4:00pm
