Qualifications

Job description

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalency certificate
  • And satisfactorily completed an acceptable training program in track repair or welding or a related field

Experience

Twelve (12) months after an employee achieves of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), he/she shall advance to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed the required written or practical tests, acquired the applicable certifications and has met the other requirements, including fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

Level D

  • Two (2) years performing the duties of a track repairer or welder or tasks in related welding fields.

Level C

  • Three (3) years of experience performing the duties of a track repairer or welder or tasks in related welding fields or performed satisfactorily the duties of a Welder D for one (1) year.

Level B

  • Four (4) years of experience performing the duties of a track repairer or welder or tasks in related welding fields or performed satisfactorily the duties of a Welder C for one (1) year.

Level A

  • Five (5) years of experience performing the duties of a track repairer or welder or tasks in related welding fields or performed satisfactorily the duties of a Welder B for one (1) year.

Level AA

  • Six (6) years of experience performing the duties of a track repairer or welder or tasks in related welding fields or performed satisfactorily the duties of a Welder A for one (1) year.

Certification/Licensure

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and must maintain it while in this job.
  • Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.
  • Possession of an American Welding Standard certificate in structure or high-pressure welding or certified in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Boilers and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX.
  • Roadway Worker Protection certification.

Preferred

Skills

  • Advanced math skills in order to complete moderately complex calculations to determine the dimension and configurations of welding projects.

Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this position either with or without reasonable accommodations.
Mission

In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

SUMMARY

The Welder Track & Structure is responsible for performing welding tasks on track and structures and various types of industrial building support or automotive equipment. This includes the construction and /or modification of existing facilities and equipment. This work requires an understanding of maintenance procedures and practices, maintenance theories, the materials, parts, tools, test equipment, and operating systems associated with WMATA track and structures repair.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs work from scaffolding ladder and other high reaching or specialized equipment as required.
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance required to maintain track equipment and structures.
  • Adheres to WMATA operating practices and safety rules and protocols.
  • Performs welding work in subways, on aerials and ballasted track sections, and/or in repair facilities.
  • Uses power saws, chipping knives, and hand shears in cutting, beveling, and contouring metal workpieces.
  • May operate Authority vehicles to travel between work locations.
  • Works variable shifts days and hours as required and as provided for under the existing union contract

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Attends on the job and formal training classes, assists individuals in higher classification levels in their assignments, or provides job specific training to lower classifications.
