GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This job is at a Depot Level repair facility performing maintenance on aircraft arresting, launching, and recovery components on an aircraft carrier. Military aviation experience is a plus. May be required to travel to ships overseas (which may be in Combat Zones) or into Foreign ports when required
DUTIES
- Follows mechanical and structural blueprints, process instructions, quality assurance instructions, and specifications issued by NAVSEA and NAVAIR
- Interacts with Quality Assurance (QA) Special Programs Manager for NDT program compliance
- Engages in the manufacture, assembly, disassembly, overhaul, repair, installation and test of ALRE systems and components in support of product development programs, fleet emergencies, supply system shortages and in-service engineering actions
- Performs at intermediate level and/or assists in jobs assigned by the Voyage Repair Department trades such as ALAD Mechanic and Welder
- Installs, service changes and tests hydraulic cylinders and heat exchangers
- Repairs various valves and automatic controls and safety devices such as meters, safety valves, and automatic alarms
- Performs and assists with onsite machining of parts using portable lathes or boring mills, and milling machines
- Connects machinery and steam fuel lines, hydraulic systems, cooling and lubricating lines
- Works from shop sketches, work documents, diagrams, specifications, service change bulletins, NAVAIR publications, written and oral instructions, engineering instructions and blueprints
- Uses drafting instruments and other measuring devices to lay out templates for a variety of parts
- Ensures the finished product generally meets plus or minus .001 inch within limits.
- Utilizes broad trade knowledge of mechanical principles, standard shop methods and general shop mathematics as it pertains to complex machinery of various types
- Utilizes ability to improvise jigs, fixtures, forms, and dies in order to manufacture, rework or alter metal parts and subassemblies
- Utilizes ability to set up, adjust and operate various types of machine tools, powered tools, and equipment, the capability of laying out machine operations from blueprints and sketches and ability to apply handbooks formulas in computing precise dimensions
- Utilizes capability to use precision measuring instruments such as torque wrenches, calipers, depth micrometers, gage blocks, height blocks, squares and straight edges
- Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have at least four (4) years of relevant experience.
- 4 years of welder experience preferred
- Military experience preferred
- Possess knowledge and proficiency in various NDT methods and procedures
- Must satisfactorily complete training and certification program to remain an NDI Inspector
- Maintenance certifications in the following is a plus: Magnetic Particle (MT), Liquid Penetrate (LP), and Visual Testing (VT)
- Must have a thorough technical knowledge of NDT techniques utilized in the repair, alteration, and maintenance on naval ships
- Must be familiar with various test equipment with proper adjustment positions and calibrations, as well as know the limitations of acceptable techniques and test methods to detect defects
- Must be familiar with the type and location of defects consistent with the fabrication process involved and ability to classify defects as acceptable, unacceptable, or irrelevant
- Must understand and apply standard geometrical formulas in Non-Destructive testing
- Must have knowledge of the Machinist trade to fabricate, modify and assemble various component parts, and the knowledge of the Pipefitter to cope with high pressure steam and hydraulic systems
- Experience in sheaves banks, cross heads, MEC accumulators, CRO valves and drive system, anchor dampers, sheave dampers, fairlead system, wire support system, barricade system and retractable sheave assemblies
- Travel will be required
- Must be a US Citizen with a Passport
- Must have or be able to obtain a secret clearance.

- Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp, pull over hand, push, reach or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
- May be required to lift up to 44 pounds and heavy, moderate carrying up to 44 pounds.
- May be required to see aircraft in flight, read dials/gauges, identify small objects and hand tools.
- Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales with or without corrective lens.
- Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
- Must be able to distinguish color, shades of color and judge three-dimensional depth.
- May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, APU, crane, truck, tractor, etc.
Environmental Factors:
- Work in an inside/outside environment to include working around machinery, objects, vehicles, ladders, and scaffolds.
- Excessive noise and vibration that can be intermittent or constant.
- Environmental conditions can included but not limited to dust, silica, asbestos, fumes, smoke, gas, solvents such as degreasing agents, grease, oils, and electrical energy
- Working on slippery or uneven surfaces
- Working closely with others or working alone
- Possible protracted or irregular hours of work as needed or required.
