Job summary

MICA Steelworks in Haltom City, Texas is seeking a Welder to fit, weld, and repair metal components per specifications and drawings. You will work under the Welding Lead and coordinate with the Shift Supervisor to meet production goals.

The role requires 1–2 years welding experience, a High School diploma or GED, ability to read blueprints, and willingness to work extended shifts in extreme temperatures. OSHA PPE and safety standards apply.

  • Pass 2G, T‑Joint, and Carbon Air Arc tests.
  • Ability to read blueprints, welding diagrams, and other instructional material.

  • Weld steel components using drawings, work orders, or verbal instructions.
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, and other directions.
  • Set up and lay out work using jigs/fixtures or hand layouts.

Job description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Welding Lead, the Welder is responsible for fitting and joining, fabricating, and repairing metal and other weldable materials by applying appropriate welding techniques in accordance with product specifications and production schedules. The Welder works with the Shift Supervisor and senior management to ensure customer products are fit and welded to each job’s specifications. Consistent production of quality UT‑passable welds is critical, and the Welder must maintain production levels determined by the Production Supervisor.

MICA Steelworks – Haltom City, Texas Plant

Current Shifts

Monday – Friday, 5:00 AM – 3:30 PM with Saturday as needed.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED required. 1‑2 years of welding experience, including overhead and jib crane operation.

Qualifications
  • Passing 2G, T‑Joint, and Carbon Air Arc tests
  • Knowledge of welding concepts, practices, procedures, and symbols
  • Ability to read blueprints, welding diagrams, and other instructional material
  • Proficiency with torches, torch tips, Air Arc, temperature sticks, welding fillet gauges, flux core and metal core wire
  • Capability to work in extreme temperatures and additional hours as needed
Responsibilities
  • Perform welding duties with a wire welder
  • Weld steel components using lay‑outs, engineering drawings, work orders, or verbal instructions
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, and other directions
  • Set up and lay out work using jigs/fixtures or hand layouts to fabricate parts and rework finished products
  • Collaborate with fitters or fitters/welders on multi‑component fabrication
  • Operate forklifts, hoists, hand power tools, slings, grinders, cutting torches, and other hand tools
  • Inspect and correct welds to meet specifications
  • Examine work pieces for defects and measure with straightedges or templates
  • Clamp, hold, tack‑weld, heat bend, grind, or bolt components as required
  • Read and follow job orders, engineering drawings, and work orders
  • Cross‑train and perform additional job tasks when necessary
  • Maintain equipment functionality and safety
  • Maintain quality and UT‑passable welds, and meet production levels
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to learn in a changing environment
  • Operate equipment safely and maintain safe working habits
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
Measure of Performance
  • Weld test administration
  • Adherence to MICA Steelworks programs and policies
  • Practice good housekeeping to keep the area clean and organized
  • Willingness to collaborate in a team environment
Working Conditions
  • Full‑time shop exposure
  • Extreme temperatures (sometimes seasonal)
  • No travel required
  • Stand for 8‑10 hours per day, up to 6 days a week
  • Good vision, hearing, smell, and balance required
  • Frequent lifting or moving up to 75 lbs
  • Regular standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and stair/ladders climbing
  • OSHA‑required PPE including welding hood when welding
Continuing Education Requirements

The employee must participate in continuing education as requested or required by the supervisor and attend mandatory educational programs.

Job Type and Hours

Full‑time, 40–55 hours per week.
