Job summary

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport Board seeks an experienced welder to weld, cut and braze components of the Airport’s infrastructure, using blueprints and measuring tools. You will lay out, fabricate and repair metal structures and train others in welding techniques.

The role requires high school completion and at least two years’ MIG/TIG/gas/electric welding experience, plus pipefitting and millwright exposure. On-site position.

Qualifications

• Two years of layout and welding experience with Mig, Tig, gas and electric welding.
• Experience in pipefitting, millwright work and industrial mechanics.
• Valid Class B driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

• Analyze work orders and drawings to determine supplies and shop priorities.
• Lay out, fabricate, modify or repair gates, signs, racks and ducts from drawings.
• Weld, cut and braze metal materials with MIG/TIG/gas/electric equipment.
• Estimate material and labor costs for welding and sheet-metal tasks.
• Train employees to use welding equipment and supervise welding work.
• Assist Environmental Affairs with field observations and reporting.

Job Overview

Under the general direction of the Pavement Maintenance Supervisor, uses gas and electric welding equipment to weld, cut, and braze materials and components of the Airport’s infrastructure. Uses blueprints, shop drawings, and special measuring instruments to perform work. Analyzes work orders to determine the need for supplies and to establish priorities; trains employees to use gas and electric welding and cutting equipment as requested by the supervisor.

What you will be doing

Analyzes work orders and drawings to determine need for supplies and to establish shop priorities. Coordinates work with other shops and departments to clarify scope and criticality of work to be performed. Works from blueprints and working drawings to lay out, fabricate, modify or repair a variety of products such as gates, signs, trailer hitches, racks, ducts and cages. Lays out reference points and dimensions on sheets, plates, tubes and other structural metal objects. Uses measuring instruments to determine dimensions of objects to be fabricated modified or repaired. Uses electric and gas welding equipment to weld, cut and braze metal materials. Uses sheet metal machines, tools and measuring instruments to lay out and fabricate, modify or repair structures or equipment. Inventories and maintains appropriate levels of supplies for the efficient operation of the shop. Estimates requirement and records actual time and materials expended on projects; maintains related records. Evaluates the work of employees assigned or being instructed in welding and cutting. Assists the Environmental Affairs Department in performing field observations of Airport activities with respect to potential environmental issues and notifies the Environmental Affairs Department of any observations that may have environmental impact.

What you need

Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent. Two (2) years of layout and welding experience using Mig, Tig, gas and electric welding and cutting equipment, with experience in pipefitting, millwright work and industrial mechanics. Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above. Possession of a valid Class B driver's license or ability to obtain one within a designated probation period.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Knowledge of sheet metal layout and fabrication techniques and practices. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with the welding trade. Skill in the use of electric and gas welding equipment and the operation of heavy equipment. Ability to work from blueprints and working drawings and to take dimensions and lay out reference points. Ability to estimate material and labor costs for welding and sheet metal assignments. Ability to communicate clearly over a two-way radio. Ability to operate computer-controlled equipment; ability to perform work in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Oracle applications. Ability to pass a medical physical examination.

Desired

Formal training in a related field. Experience with the following industrial trades: pipefitting, millwright work, and industrial mechanics.

Special requirements

Must have a good private driving record: (a) no more than two (2) convictions of moving violations in the last 36 months and (b) no DWI convictions in the last 60 months. This is a DOT-designated and Airport-designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and to submit to drug and alcohol screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.

Effort

Works outdoors for extended periods in inclement weather. Performs heavy manual labor, frequently exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 100 pounds. Climbs ladders and work at various heights above ground. Exchanges information by telephone, email, all radios (all frequencies) and in person. Drives to locations on Airport property.
