Job summary

Scott Bridge Co is seeking a Welder to join our team in Tuscaloosa, AL. The role involves welding, cutting, grinding, and cleaning up project components under supervision, with close collaboration to foremen and crane operators on construction projects.

The welder will use oxy-acetylene cutting torch, weld sheet piles, and perform stick welding in all positions while adhering to safety and environmental initiatives. Physical demands include lifting, standing, and prolonged outdoor exposure.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years welding experience or equivalent training/experience.
  • Capable of passing standard welding tests and reading blueprints/sketches.
  • Strong knowledge of welding trades, metal types, and safe marine work practices.

Responsibilities

  • Welds, cuts, grinds, chips, and cleans up project components as directed by supervision.
  • Cuts and prepares metal using oxy-acetylene torch and related equipment.
  • Welds sheet metal and pile driven components in various positions.
  • Performs stick welding in all positions as required.
  • Rigs cables and handles steel plates and sheet piles with cranes and hand tools.
  • Operates saws, presses, drills, and grinders to fabricate repair parts.
  • Inspects welding equipment and notifies Foreman of parts needs.
  • Assists with material handling and maintains safe, efficient work areas.
  • Collaborates with Foreman, Crane Operators, and helpers to complete projects safely.

POSITION SUMMARY

Incumbents are responsible for welding, cutting, grinding, chipping and cleaning-up the projects with which they are involved. Typically, they will work closely with Superintendent, Foreman, and other skilled crafts persons.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBLITIES
  • Works as assigned by the Fabrication Foreman to ensure the successful completion of ongoing or new construction projects.
  • Displays and uses capabilities to cut, weld chip and grind metal as may be required by the project.
  • Utilizes oxygen-acetylene cutting torch and related equipment when required to cut away metal from existing structure, beams or platforms.
  • Welds together pieces of sheet metal once individual sheet piles are pile driven into place.
  • Applies ability to stick rod weld in all positions to complete a job.
  • Rigs cable for lifting and moving objects from one location to another.
  • Handles placement of steel plates and sheet piles with the aid of equipment such as cranes, winches, cable and hand tools that may be available.
  • Operates saws, presses, drills and grinders to fabricate parts needed to repair a piece of equipment.
  • Inspects and makes minor repairs to welding equipment; notifies Foreman of parts needed to complete repairs.
  • Picks up needed materials and supplies to complete project.
  • Works closely with Foreman, Crane Operators, Helpers, and other skilled crafts persons to complete current projects in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of two (2) years welding experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary welding skills, knowledge and abilities is required. The incumbent must have good knowledge of:

  1. The practices and materials of the welding trade
  2. The physical characteristics of various types of metal used in the construction.
  3. The operation of various types of equipment and devices
  4. The importance of safe work practices in a marine environment.

Incumbents must also be capable of passing standard welding tests that demonstrate proficiency to perform the job. Skill in the operation of acetylene and arc welding equipment, hand and power tools, and welding blueprints and sketches is also required.

The incumbent must be an effective verbal communicator and be able to keep simple records of time and material used for each project.

PHYISCAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, Welder must be capable of:

  • Wearing welding face shields, personal flotation devices, respirators.
  • Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance work.
  • Climbing vertical ladders
  • Working at elevated heights
  • Lifting 50 lb. objects as required
  • Carrying 25 lb. objects as required
  • Adapting to extreme temperature changes
  • Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure
  • Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed by the circumstances of the incident.
