Job summary

EnergySolutions is seeking a welding technician to perform hand-welding and flame-cutting on metal components, ensuring safety and precision. You will operate multiple welding processes, review blueprints, and maintain quality standards while adhering to health and safety regulations.

Qualifications

• AWS D1.3 welding certification required.

• Minimum 2 years welding experience in sheet metal preferred.

Responsibilities

• Uses hand-welding or flame-cutting to weld metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams, following safety and accuracy standards.
• Operates safety equipment and maintains safe working habits.
• Operates welding equipment for various processes (GTAW, GMAW, plasma, SMAW, resistive welding, torch cutting).
• Monitors welding and burning parameters to prevent overheating, warping, or distortion.
• Positions, aligns, and secures parts prior to welding using measuring tools.
• Reviews shop drawings and specs to plan layout and welding operations.
• Grinds or removes excess welds and slag to ensure smooth, safe edges.

Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities

• Uses hand-welding or flame-cutting to weld metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams. Performs duties with a high regard for safety and accuracy.
• Operate safety equipment and use safe and efficient work habits.
• Operates manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and cutting torch.
• Monitors the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material to ensure conformance with specifications.
• Positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straight edges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
• Analyzes shop drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
• Clamps, holds, tack-welds, grinds or bolts component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
• Grinds off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment to smooth out rough edges and maintain safety.
• Marks or tags material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required ensuring proper shipment to customers.
• Dismantles metal assemblies or cuts scrap metal using thermal-cutting equipment such as flame-cutting torches or plasma-arc equipment.
• Performs daily activities and prioritizes tasks based on written and oral directions from Weld Lead and Manager.
• Must complete process/facility training as assigned.
• There is no supervision of other workers at this level.
• Responsible for the quality of his/her own work and satisfying customer (internal and external) specifications

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

• Ability to perform physically demanding work
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and wear a respirator
• Ability to carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and kneel
• Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and environments wherein there is exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards
• Ability to work in extreme temperatures
• Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
• Ability to work in or around moving vehicles, rotating equipment, and ladders/scaffolds
• Basic math and computer skills; mechanical ability
• Ability to wear protective equipment such as: goggles, ear plugs, gloves, and steel toe boots
• Normal vision (with or without correction)
• Ability to perceive depth and adjust focus; basic hand/eye coordination
• Ability to see close and distance, basic colors/shades, and peripheral vision
• Forklift certified
