Position Summary
Under immediate supervision, you will assemble component parts into a completed product following blueprints, work orders, and other written and/or verbal specifications.
You will also position parts of the unit being assembled following specifications while using knowledge gained by your experience.
Under minimal supervision, you will weld fabricated metal components on the production floor. Welds are performed on parts or subassemblies where cosmetics may not be a factor. You will set up gas, arc or MIG welding equipment, may position and fit basic metal components, and produce component parts to blueprint tolerances.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Maintain welding equipment, making adjustments to weld different parts or subassemblies
- Perform various simple welding operations (i.e. pins, knuckles, joints) following blueprint weld symbols with limited supervision
- Move parts and/or workpiece manually, by crane, and secure workpiece in weld fixture or table using clamps and wrenches
- Maintain production quantities, efficiencies and quality on parts welded
- Perform quality control inspections and clean welded components
- Prepare surfaces to be welded and work with blueprints to verify accuracy of pre-assembled metal components to be welded
- Perform simple measurements using devices or gauges to check work
- Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, cable slings, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)
- Knowledge of basic procedures of MIG welding and cutting tools
- Knowledge and understanding of basic procedures of voltage and amperage for given requirements
- Basic math skills
- Skill in the operation of grinders and deburring equipment
- Ability to perform standard measurements using a tape measure and other measurement devices
- Ability to weld simple assemblies with little supervision
- Ability to read blueprints with weld symbols and specifications
- Ability to lift and position fabricated metal parts manually, using a crane
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment
- Ability to work overtime and/or including weekends as production schedules dictate
- Ability to weld vertically and downward
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum 1 year of previous welding experience
Working Conditions
- Work in a non-climate-controlled metal manufacturing production environment
- Communicate with supervisors and fellow employees
- Requires near, far, depth and color vision
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints
- Ability to use and understand a tape measure
- Work in an environment with noise up to 75 decibels (with 25-decibel earplugs)
- Ability to kneel for up to 1 hour
- Ability to stand on concrete for 90% of the shift, and walk up to 75% of the shift
- Ability to climb 13 ft using 12-inch rung ladders
- Ability to lift, push or pull up to 40 lbs and carry that weight 5 ft
- Ability to bend, stoop and crouch
- Ability to work with arms elevated for periods up to 5 minutes at a time
