Job summary

Old Dominion Brush Company (ODB) in Richmond, Virginia is seeking a Welder to join the Welding and Fabrication team. Under supervision, you will lay out, fit and weld fabricated steel frames and parts on the production floor, following blueprints and specifications.

The role requires MIG welding with some TIG, ability to read drawings, and use measuring tools. You will operate equipment, handle materials, and wear PPE in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • One year in metal fabrication/manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience with MIG welding; some TIG welding is a plus.
  • Ability to read drawings and blueprints.

Responsibilities

  • Lay out, fits and welds fabricated steel frames and parts per blueprints.
  • Measures and marks locations for components.
  • Welds in vertical, flat, horizontal or overhead positions.
  • Operates overhead crane/hoist and material handling equipment.
  • Maintains PPE and safety in workspace.

Old Dominion Brush Company (ODB) is accepting applications to fill the position of Welder in the department of Welding and Fabrication in Richmond, Virginia. Our Parent Company is Alamo Group.

The Welder, under moderate to minimal supervision (depending upon experience), lays out, fits and welds fabricated steel frames and/or metal parts on production floor using welding equipment. Measures and marks locations for metal components on assembly table following blueprints. Verifies position of metal components in assembly using straight edge, combination square and rule.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Adjusts and uses torch and plasma cutter and/or grinder properly in standard/non-standard positions following engineering drawings.
  • Welds in vertical, flat, horizontal or overhead positions.
  • Uses basic hand tools, such as tape measure, square, clamps, etc., to verify proper weld application and quality of weldments.
  • Examines work piece for defects and ensures conformance with specifications.
  • Welds out components previously tack welded by experienced welders.
  • Preps and finishes metal components by grinding or sanding.
  • Operates material handling equipment. Operates overhead crane/hoist.
  • Responsible for movement of material or product and proper storage.
  • Must be physically able to wear required appropriate personal protective equipment including welding helmet, gloves, protective apron and/or leather attire, hearing protection, safety glasses, steel toe shoes and fresh air/forced air respirator as required.
  • Performs MIG welding and some TIG welding.
  • Reliable and punctual attendance.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Experience in MIG welding with some TIG welding
  • Ability to read and understand English
  • Capable of performing standard measurements. Ability to read a tape measure in American measurements; ability to use other measuring devices and understand fractions, decimals, and dimensions
  • Ability to read drawings and blueprints
  • Ability to adhere to company safety expectations and wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to multitask in fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team
  • Mechanical aptitude and demonstrates initiative; willingness to be flexible and learn and work in all welding areas
  • Understand basic procedure of voltage and amp settings for given requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED certificate preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous education in or minimum of one year working in a metal fabrication-manufacturing environment. Vocational education in welding may contribute to experience.
  • Fab shop and welding experience a plus.
  • Experience with JD Edwards helpful.

Wage range is $20 to $25/hour commensurate with experience
