Job summary

A.O. Smith in McBee, SC is seeking a Welder 1 to join our production team. The welder uses equipment to join metals and visually inspects welds before releasing material to the next station.

This role requires following standard work, maintaining a clean work area, and working in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma and completed GMAW welding training with OJT within 80 hours. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, work overtime, and wear PPE.

Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTION (job summary/purpose):

The Welder 1 uses equipment to joint metals. The welder or welding operator shall visually inspect for weld defects before releasing material to the next station.

SPECIFIC DUTIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES (List in order of importance)

  1. Completes set up procedures and operates/ changeover moderately complex equipment
  2. Obtains parts and materials needed to complete tasks.
  3. Store and properly identify finished units
  4. Maintains an awareness of all safety issues within the area of responsibility and responds
  5. Notify the area team leader of unplanned downtime or quality issues.
  6. Periodically checks products per company policy to ensure quality and uniform completion; resolves any identified problems and alerts supervisor.
  7. Perform other tasks as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICIATIONS (required skills/abilities):

  • Ability to understand and follow standard work and work instructions
  • Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean and organized condition and follow prescribed safety rules and quality procedures.
  • Ability to perform repetitive work while paying attention to the detail and quality of work performed.
  • Willingness to learn new tasks, cross-train, rotate and work as a part of a team.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Ability to follow all safety and quality policies and procedures.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (required):

* High school diploma or equivalent.

* Completion of required GMAW welding training and on-the-job training (OJT) by department & station within 80 hours plus OJT. If required for workstation, completion of a welder/welding operator performance qualification to one or more Welding Procedure Specifications (WPQ/WOPQ).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

* Must be able to operate within afast-paced, collaborative, and where teamwork is essential, requiring flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines

* Working around moving machinery/heavy equipment

* Comfortable performing tasks in heated areas (around furnaces)

* Operate machinery in a hot and humid production facility

* Must wear proper PPE (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, ear plugs, welding PPE and any additional PPE required for task being performed)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (demands):

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at all times, and 50 pounds sporadically.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
  • Able to support some daily overtime and breakdown occurrences.
  • Possess dexterity and stability as required for precision work.
  • Ability to complete work involving prolonged periods of physical exertion and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to stand for a full shift (8 hours).
  • Must be able to see details at close range.
