Job summary

Prolec-GE Waukesha, Inc. seeks a skilled welder to perform MIG, TIG, and submerged-arc welding on carbon and stainless steel structures for transformer components.

You will read engineering prints, select correct rods and wire, set up equipment, and maintain a clean, safe work area while following blueprints and standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience with carbon and stainless steel welding.
  • Ability to read and follow engineering prints and weld symbols.
  • Knowledge of MIG, TIG and submerged-arc weld processes.
  • Commitment to safe, quality-focused workmanship.

Responsibilities

  • Receive assignments and instructions from supervisor in verbal and written form.
  • Select rods, wire and machine settings for welding operations.
  • Set up and perform welding on carbon and stainless steel structures for transformer construction.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and welding symbols per specifications.
  • Use measurement tools and templates as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness of tools and work area; perform minor repairs.
  • Ensure conformance to design criteria and inspection procedures.
  • Assist with training of other employees and follow safety policies.

JOB SUMMARY

To proficiently weld in at least one of the following four areas:

  • Area 1 - Tank Weld (Tank Weld, End Walls, and Weld LTC)
  • Area 3 - Top Cover Weld (Top Cover, Cover Weld, Cover Cut)
  • Area 4 - Small Parts
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Receive assignments and instructions from supervisor - both verbal and written.
  • Select proper rods, wire, and machine adjustments for welding operation setup for the job at hand from storage or queuing areas.
  • Perform setup and all position welding operations on carbon steel and stainless steel structures and weldments fabricated for transformer construction.
  • Read, understand, and follow guidelines set forth by E.I.s, M.P.s, S.P.s, O.I.C.s, and blueprints when performing assigned work.
  • Use tape measures, rules, squares and templates as necessary to perform the required operation and produce a quality product.
  • Use appropriate techniques to perform MIG, TIG, and submerged-arc welding, to perform oxi-acetylene cutting and brazing, and to perform stainless steel and stainless steel to mild steel welding ability.
  • Read and interpret engineering prints and weld symbols.
  • Perform proper cleaning of welds as necessary.
  • Keep tools, equipment and work area clean and orderly.
  • Perform minor equipment repairs and machine maintenance.
  • Inspector welding processes, materials, etc. for conformance to design criteria and applicable specifications and inspection procedures.
  • Produce product accurately within the established standard.
  • Assist supervisor, as required, in the orientation and training of other employees.
  • Comply with all safety policies and procedures and actively participate in defined zero harm safety culture driven initiatives.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
TOOLS AND MACHINERY

Submerged arc, oxy/fuel torches, SMAW, GMAW, saw, air arc welding, brazing and TIG equipment. Also overhead and job cranes, welding positioners and fixtures, portable grinders, leak test equipment and miscellaneous other tools.

MATERIALS

Mild steels, alloy and stainless steels, Jessop steel, steel castings, copper, copper alloys, Easy Flo 45, Silphos, flux grinding disc, anti-spatter, welding wire.

Personal protective equipment to include safety glasses, steel toed shoes, hearing protection, welding apron, face shield, and appropriate gloves.

GENERAL

Works under general supervision. Able to layout and fabricate materials. Has working knowledge of all welding processes available. Requires coordination of both hands and eyes to make adequate welds meeting various specifications. Work involves exposure to smoke, fumes, and heated materials. Work varies from working at ground level to working in, on top of, and around the sides of the unit which may be 6 feet or more in height.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

H igh school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
