Qualifications

  • Must stay in position for at least two years before promotion to Welder II.
  • Must work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Operate safety equipment and maintain safe work habits.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind and bolt parts to required configurations.
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment and notify supervisors.
  • Operate welding equipment across GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, PAW, SMAW, and SAW processes.
  • Monitor welding processes to avoid overheating or warping.
  • Examine work pieces for defects and measure conformance with specifications.
  • Recognize and use hand and power tools common to welding.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts prior to assembly.

Use hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate safety equipment, and use safe work habits.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind and/or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment and/or defective materials, and notify supervisors.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
  • Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
  • Examine work pieces for defects, and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Educational and Other Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum one (1) year work related skill, knowledge, and hands on experience or vocational training preferred, but not required.
  • Must stay in position for at least two (2) years depending on prior experience before promoting to Welder II.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Sensitive to confidential information.
  • Must work independently and as a member of team.
Mental and Physical Requirements:
  • Able to read, speak and write English.
  • Strong physical and mental health to maintain demanding workload.
  • Able to work under stressful conditions at times.
  • Climbing - able to go up and down stairs.
  • Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
  • Able to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats when needed, including welding safety equipment.
  • Position will consistently dictate 40 - 60 hours per week with frequent overtime demands based on the workload requirements.
  • Position will require some (6) six day weeks when workload demands, with time off scheduled per current workload and other staff availability.
  • Strong work ethics of integrity and honesty strives for excellence in all activities employing accompanying communication.
  • Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  • Identifying information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
  • Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Resolving conflicts and other minor problems.
