Job summary

Greenberry Industrial seeks a Weld Engineer to support its structural steel, fracture-critical, heavy industrial, nuclear, and ASME fabrication operations. The role acts as the company’s welding engineering SME for procedures, qualifications, quality programs, and code compliance.

Qualifications

  • Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is required.
  • Minimum 8 years of welding engineering, fabrication, welding quality, or related industrial experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code - Steel, AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code, ASME Section IX, and AISC requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and qualifying WPSs, PQRs, and WPQs.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, welding symbols, and specifications.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic quality management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, qualify, revise, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), PQRs, and supporting welding documentation.

  • Troubleshoot welding-related production issues and implement corrective actions.

Compensation: $120,000 - $165,000 DOE

Position Summary

Greenberry Industrial is seeking a Weld Engineer to support our structural steel, fracture-critical, heavy industrial, nuclear, and ASME fabrication operations. This position serves as the company's subject matter expert for welding engineering, welding procedures, welder qualifications, fabrication quality, and welding code compliance.

The Weld Engineer will be responsible for developing, qualifying, and maintaining Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs), Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQs), and welding-related quality programs in accordance with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code - Steel, AWS D1.5, ASME Section IX, and project-specific requirements.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical welding expertise with hands-on fabrication experience and possesses the ability to work closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Project Management teams to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient fabrication activities throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
Weld Engineering & Technical Leadership
  • Serve as Greenberry's technical authority for welding processes, welding metallurgy, code compliance, and fabrication best practices.
  • Develop, qualify, revise, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs), and supporting welding documentation.
  • Develop and administer Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) programs.
  • Evaluate customer specifications, engineering requirements, detail drawings, and contract documents to determine applicable welding requirements.
  • Support bid reviews, project planning, and constructability assessments from a weld engineering perspective.
  • Provide technical guidance regarding welding processes including SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, and SAW.
  • Troubleshoot welding-related production issues and implement corrective actions.
AWS D1.1 & AWS D1.5 Program Oversight
  • Ensure compliance with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code and AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code requirements.
  • Review structural steel and fracture-critical fabrication activities for compliance with applicable standards.
  • Support AISC-certified fabrication programs and customer-specific welding requirements.
  • Review and approve weld maps, welding sequences, fit-up requirements, and welding plans.
  • Support preparation and execution of welding procedure qualification testing.
  • Monitor essential variable compliance and qualification continuity requirements.
Quality & Inspection Support
  • Partner with Quality Control personnel to ensure welding inspections meet project and code requirements.
  • Review NDE requirements and assist with interpretation of UT, MT, PT, RT, and VT results.
  • Support root cause investigations related to welding nonconformances and quality events.
  • Ensure traceability requirements are maintained throughout fabrication activities.
  • Participate in customer audits, quality audits, and third-party reviews.
  • Exercise stop-work authority when quality or safety is at risk.
  • Develop quality related project submittals
Engineering & Operations Collaboration
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Estimating, Project Management, and Production to develop practical welding solutions.
  • Review fabrication drawings, weld symbols, engineering specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve welding productivity, quality, and safety.
  • Support implementation of continuous improvement initiatives throughout fabrication operations.
  • Assist in developing welding training programs and mentoring fabrication personnel.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Develop welding-related procedures, work instructions, and quality documentation.
  • Generate and maintain welding records, qualification records, and turnover documentation.
  • Prepare welding engineering reports and technical recommendations.
  • Support maintenance of welding quality systems aligned with AWS, AISC, ASME, and customer requirements.
  • Ensure complete and auditable welding documentation packages are maintained.
Qualifications Required
  • Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
  • Minimum 8 years of welding engineering, fabrication, welding quality, or related industrial experience.

  • Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication and fracture-critical welding requirements.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting NDE reports and acceptance criteria.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, specifications, and welding symbols.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic quality management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical field.
  • Experience developing PQRs/WPSs in accordance with AWS requirements may be acceptable in lieu of technical degree.
  • AWS Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng) certification.
  • Experience supporting DOE, DOD, nuclear, energy, semiconductor, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Experience with fracture-critical bridge fabrication and DOT projects.
  • Familiarity with ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.1, and ASME B31.3 requirements.
  • Experience supporting AISC certification programs.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience in fabrication environments.
  • Experience reviewing NDE procedures per AWS & ASME Section VIII requirements
Physical & Work Environment
  • Primarily performed in fabrication facilities with regular exposure to welding, grinding, lifting, and industrial manufacturing operations.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, ascend platforms, and conduct shop inspections.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent interaction with active welding and fabrication operations.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with Washington and Oregon OSHA requirements.
