Job Description

Position Title: Head Coach

Department: Athletics

Reports To: Athletic Director

Summary

To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, develop an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and increase self‑esteem.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coaches individuals in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Plans and schedules a regular program of practice during the season.
  • Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which the assigned sport is conducted at all times when students are present.
  • Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.
  • Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breaches of such standards by individual students.
  • Maintains competency in rules, rule interpretations, meet procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport.
  • Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in this sport and consistently applies those criteria.
  • Adheres to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow‑up.
  • Works closely with the athletics director to schedule intramural and interscholastic contests.
  • Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Maintains necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.
  • Accounts for all equipment or delegates the responsibility.
  • Develops a consistent and positive public communications procedure through the school and media to inform parents and the general public about the athletic program.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Job Specifications

Supervises students of the particular program and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with district policies and applicable laws.

Education and Experience

To be decided by Executive Director and/or Building Principal.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid South Carolina Teaching Certificate, if applicable.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively before administrators, staff, parents, and students.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to interpret and apply common‑sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; analyze information and use logic to address work‑related issues and problems; solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in the specific field; establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community; communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form; perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Physical Demands

Frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand; travel from building to other sites. Requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; must be able to hear conversations in quiet environments.

Work Environment

Works primarily inside; meets deadlines under severe time constraints; may work irregular or extended hours; directly responsible for safety, well‑being, and work output of students and coaches. Noise level varies from quiet to loud.

Term of Employment

Seasonal. Athletic Supplements Pay Scale.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
