Job summary

West Fraser in North Carolina seeks a Maintenance Supervisor to lead a crew of Millwrights, Electricians, Welders and Contractors. The role focuses on safe, reliable maintenance to meet production targets in a sawmill environment.

You'll manage planning, contractor safety, and improvement projects, with emphasis on cost control and mentorship of apprentices. A strong industrial background and supervisory experience are essential.

Qualifications

  • Prior Journeyman Electrician or Millwright.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Well organized.
  • Minimum of five years (plus) of industrial experience.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Two or Four-year degree preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Achieve maintenance goals with safety as a priority.
  • Support troubleshooting and observations of machine centers with shift supervisors and maintenance staff to meet production and quality standards.
  • Manage department cost to optimize manufacturing unit cost; develop and educate key metrics.
  • Plan maintenance, schedule non‑emergency maintenance, coordinate PM routes.
  • Communicate goals and instructions effectively.
  • Manage conflicts within the team.
  • Supervise maintenance and cleanup personnel on varying schedules.
  • Oversee contractor safety through active leadership.
  • Maintain sawmill equipment including De‑Barkers, Gang Edgers, Trimmer, Sorter, Stacker, Conveyors, Chippers, Blowers, Hydraulics, Pneumatics.
  • Ensure crew safety via Lock‑Out, FLRA field risk assessments, and safety audits.
  • Arrange West Fraser training for and mentor apprentices.
  • Create and plan improvement projects.
  • Manage parts with the purchaser.
  • Schedule and track attendance.
  • Periodic weekend coverage may be required.
  • Inspect completed work.

Job description

The successful candidate will provide leadership, training, and development to hourly personnel by managing the process flow, resources and workforce to meet and exceed established budgets and performance objectives.

Reporting directly to the Maintenance Superintendent in this full‑time role, the successful candidate will lead a maintenance crew of Millwrights, Electricians, Welders and Contractors. Higher consideration will be granted to those who have previous experience in the wood remanufacturing sector in a Sawmill, Planer Mill or with forest products.

What You Will Do:
  • Achieving maintenance goals with the highest regard for employee safety
  • Capable of supporting troubleshooting & observations of machine centers with shift supervisors and other maintenance staff to ensure production and quality standards are met
  • Managing the department cost in an aggressive manner assuring optimum manufacturing unit cost; develop and educate key metrics.
  • Maintenance planning, planning non‑emergency maintenance, coordinating PM routes
  • Effectively communicating goals and/or instructions
  • Managing conflicts
  • Supervising maintenance and cleanup personnel on varying schedules
  • Managing contractor safety through active leadership.
  • Maintenance of sawmill equipment (this includes but is not limited to De‑Barkers, Gang Edgers, Trimmer, Sorter, Stacker, Conveyors, Chippers, Blowers, Hydraulic Systems, Pneumatic Systems)
  • Safety of the crew (Lock‑Out Procedures, assisting with and verifying Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRA), Safety Audits)
  • Arrange WF training for and mentoring apprentices
  • Creating and planning improvement projects
  • Managing parts with the purchaser
  • Scheduling and attendance
  • Will include periodic weekend coverage
  • Inspecting completed work
What You Will Need:
