The Web Designer is responsible for creating visually appealing, user-friendly, and accessible web designs for websites, web applications, SharePoint, social media, and other digital interfaces. This role requires a strong understanding of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) principles, graphic design, and web technologies. The successful candidate will be a creative and collaborative individual with a passion for creating intuitive and engaging online experiences that meet the specific needs of DoW/AF personnel and the public. This position works closely with developers, content creators, and stakeholders to ensure the design aligns with project requirements and DoW/AF standards.
Design & Development:
- Design and develop visually appealing and user-friendly website and web application interfaces, adhering to established style guides and branding guidelines.
- Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to effectively communicate design ideas and user flows.
- Develop user interface (UI) elements and components that are consistent across different platforms and devices.
- Translate user needs and business requirements into intuitive and functional designs.
- Ensure designs are responsive and optimized for various screen sizes (desktop, tablet, mobile).
User Experience (UX) Research & Design:
- Conduct user research and analysis to understand user needs, behaviors, and goals.
- Develop user personas, journey maps, and user flows to inform design decisions.
- Conduct usability testing and gather feedback to improve the user experience.
- Apply UX principles to create intuitive and engaging interfaces that are easy to navigate and use.
Graphic Design & Visual Communication:
- Create high-quality graphics, icons, and other visual elements to enhance the user experience.
- Maintain brand consistency across all digital assets.
- Ensure all visual elements are optimized for web performance.
- Develop infographics and other visual aids to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner.
Accessibility:
- Design websites and web applications that are accessible to users with disabilities, adhering to accessibility standards such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).
- Ensure all designs meet Section 508 compliance requirements.
- Conduct accessibility testing and remediation.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Collaborate with developers, content creators, and stakeholders to ensure design aligns with project requirements and technical feasibility.
- Present design concepts and solutions to stakeholders in a clear and persuasive manner.
- Gather and incorporate feedback from stakeholders to refine designs.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to the overall success of the project.
Other Duties:
- Stay abreast of the latest web design trends and technologies.
- Maintain a portfolio of design work.
- Contribute to the development of design guidelines and standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Education/Experience: Minimum of 10 years experience with Associate's degree; Minimum of 8 years experience with Bachelor's degree; Minimum of 6 years experience with Master's degree; Minimum of 3 years experience with PhD. A degree in one of these fields is highly desired: Graphic Design, Web Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or a related field. However, four years of additional relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD).
- Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Experience with content management systems (CMS) such as AFPIMS, AWS, or similar.
- Experience with wireframing and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD).
- Knowledge of responsive design principles and techniques.
- Understanding of accessibility standards and guidelines (WCAG).
Portfolio:
- A strong online portfolio demonstrating a variety of web design projects and showcasing design skills, ideally in the DoW or military environments.
Security Clearance:
- Active Top Secret/SCI eligible.
Certifications:
- Active CompTIA Security+, or CASP+, or UX-PM Certification, or TOGA
