Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in developing web applications using core technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Equivalent education and experience may be considered.

Overview

The Application Development Division in the Information Technology Services Directorate is seeking a Web Application Engineer to provide application development and maintenance services for Oak Ridge National Laboratory. You will be responsible for the development, maintenance, testing and ongoing support of enterprise-level solutions. You will specialize in the development and support of web applications using a Vue.js front end, and a .NET back end with a SQL Server database.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain Single-Page Applications using ASP.NET, Vue.js, and Vuetify to support ORNL business and operational requirements.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain middle-tier applications using C# and the .NET platform.
  • Serve as an application development analyst supporting the implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of web applications.
  • Collaborate with business customers to gather, analyze, and document user requirements and translate those requirements into effective application designs and solutions.
  • Analyze software requirements and assist with application architecture and design decisions.
  • Model, implement, and develop queries for Microsoft SQL Server databases to support application functionality and data needs.
  • Analyze application code and data to identify issues, answer questions related to system operations, and support troubleshooting and performance improvements.
  • Develop and execute unit tests and automated tests to ensure application quality, functionality, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with software developers and cross-functional team members to design, develop, test, and implement application solutions.
  • Apply ORNL software quality assurance standards, ITIL best practices, and established development processes throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Support ORNL project management requirements, including planning, documentation, coordination, and delivery of application development activities.
  • Evaluate and apply emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence tools, to improve software development efficiency and accelerate the application development process.

Basic Qualifications
  • BS degree in computer science, software engineering, computer information systems, or a related technical or scientific field.
  • 5 or more years of experience in:
  • Designing and querying relational databases, such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle.
  • Applying formal application development and debugging techniques.
  • Developing web applications using core web technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing single-page web applications using ASP.NET MVC and Web API.
  • Experience with the .NET Framework (4 or greater) and/or Modern .NET (8 or greater).
  • Experience developing and querying Microsoft SQL Server databases, preferably version 2019 or later.
  • Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps Server, GitLab, or Azure DevOps Services.
  • Knowledge of secure web coding techniques to prevent common vulnerabilities, including injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), and broken access control.
  • Experience analyzing code and application performance, identifying security vulnerabilities, and troubleshooting software issues.
  • Experience developing and executing unit tests.
  • Experience analyzing business workflows and translating business requirements into application solutions.
  • Experience working in an Agile software development environment.
