Job description

The Weather Company is the world’s leading weather provider, helping people and businesses make more informed decisions and take action in the face of weather. Together with advanced technology and AI, The Weather Company’s high-volume weather data, insights, advertising, and media solutions across the open web help people, businesses, and brands around the world prepare for and harness the power of weather in a scalable, privacy-forward way. The world’s most accurate forecaster globally, the company reaches hundreds of enterprise clients and more than 360 million monthly active users via its digital properties from The Weather Channel (weather.com) and Weather Underground (wunderground.com).

AI is part of how we work:

Human judgment, expertise, and creativity remain essential and are amplified by AI. We expect everyone in this role to use AI thoughtfully and proactively to accelerate their performance, improve the quality of their work, and explore new possibilities. We are looking for people who are curious, adaptable, and excited to help shape an AI-enabled culture that delivers better outcomes for our customers and our company.

Job brief:

The Weather Company is hiring a Weather Science Intern for a 12-month term on our Consumer Weather Science team. This is a hands-on role for a science-minded builder: someone who knows weather, likes to code, is energized by AI tooling, and thinks like a product person. You will work alongside meteorologists, engineers, and product managers to improve real consumer weather experiences used by millions of people, across a portfolio that spans labs.weather.com experiments, flagship app features, and the Project Synoptic forecasting platform, with Storm Radar as one of your focal projects.

This is not a fetch-coffee internship and it is not a summer project that gets shelved in August. You will own real work, get mentored by a senior science and product team, and build the exact skills (agentic AI, product engineering, applied meteorology) that the weather industry is moving toward. We designed the role as a runway: prove yourself over the year and there is a clear path to a full-time offer.

The impact you\'ll make:

  • Contribute across the Consumer Weather Science portfolio. Help build and improve consumer weather experiences that span topics like severe weather, snow, pollen, wildfire, and outdoor and seasonal activities, from labs.weather.com experiments to flagship app features.
  • Make Storm Radar better for the people who actually use it (a focal project). Partner with our Storm Radar product lead to pressure-test the product against real “in-field” moments: the user standing outside deciding whether to seek shelter, keep driving, or resume the game. Look hard at latency (does the newest radar arrive fast enough to matter) and global coverage (does it hold up outside the US), and turn what you find into clear product feedback.
  • Prototype with modern AI tooling. Build small, working prototypes of new consumer experiences and internal tools using our stack: Python, LLM and agentic workflows, and a modern web stack (Next.js, React, TypeScript) on AWS and Vercel. You will ship fast, learn by doing, and get real code review and mentorship.
  • Do science-grounded analysis. Pull, clean, and analyze weather data (radar, model output, observations) to answer product questions across the portfolio and confirm that features are meteorologically sound. You will turn analysis into decision ready findings the team can act on.

What you\'ve accomplished:

  • Current graduate student or recent graduate in atmospheric science, meteorology, or a closely related quantitative field (Graduate students preferred; strong senior undergraduates considered).
  • Genuine curiosity about weather and a track record of teaching yourself things (personal projects, research, forecasting, competitions).
  • Comfort with Python and real interest in AI and agentic tooling. You do not need to be an expert. We care about aptitude and appetite to learn.
  • A product and business instinct: you care about how real users experience a product, not just the model behind it.
  • Able to commit to the full ~12-month term (roughly 30 hours/week in the summer and 10 hours/week during the school year) and to work hybrid from a TWC hub (Atlanta preferred; New York or Andover also work).

Pay Rate: $35.00/hr (Undergraduate) – $50.00/hr (Graduate)
