Job summary

HDR, Inc. in Louisville, KY is seeking Water/Wastewater Interns for 2027. You will assist with planning, design, and delivery of water, wastewater, and site development projects, and support construction plans and engineering reports.

This internship offers exposure to hydrology, geotechnical tunneling, and multidisciplinary project coordination. Preferred candidates are currently enrolled engineering students with familiarity in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, MATLAB, and Python, plus strong teamwork

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, design, and delivery of water, wastewater, and site development projects.
• Support preparation of construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and engineering reports.
• Perform engineering calculations and analyses to support design decisions.
• Participate in site visits, field investigations, and construction-phase support activities (submittals and RFIs).
• Support hydraulic modeling, data analysis, and water resources studies.

We are seeking motivated Water/Wastewater Interns to join our team in 2027!

Depending on your interests and project needs, you may contribute to one or more of the following areas:

Water/Wastewater & Civil Site

• Assist with the planning, design, and delivery of water, wastewater, and site development projects.
• Support the preparation of construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and engineering reports.
• Perform engineering calculations and analyses to support design decisions.
• Participate in site visits, field investigations, and construction-phase support activities, including submittal and RFI reviews.

Water Resources

• Support projects involving flood risk reduction, dams, levees, stormwater systems, wetlands, and river restoration.
• Assist with hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, data analysis, and water resources studies.
• Prepare design calculations, technical reports, and presentations.

Geotechnical/Tunneling

• Assist with geotechnical and tunneling analyses and design for tunnels, underground structures, excavations, and foundations.
• Support subsurface investigations, fieldwork, geotechnical reporting, and engineering evaluations.
• Contribute to numerical modeling, design calculations, technical documentation, and construction observation activities.
• Gain exposure to a variety of tunneling methods, ground support systems, and multidisciplinary project coordination.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Current Civil Engineering student or Biosystems
• Preference given to local candidates.
• Relevant coursework, projects, internship, or research experience in engineering or a related field.
• Familiarity with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, MATLAB, Python, or similar tools.
• Exposure design, analysis, modeling, field investigations, construction, or data collection activities.
• Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills with an interest in infrastructure and civil engineering projects.
