Job description

Ready to make a splash this summer? As the Waterfront Stew at Camp Classen, you'll oversee all the fun and excitement at our beautiful waterfront! This role is perfect for those with lifeguard experience who are passionate about safety and water activities. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Ensuring the waterfront is safe and free from hazards.
  2. Supervising lifeguards and enforcing waterfront rules.
  3. Coordinating swim schedules.
  4. Teaming up with the Assistant Program Director to plan our epic weekly Aquafest.
  5. Organizing and implementing safety drills and emergency procedures.
  6. Participating in camp life, leading in a cabin when needed, and assisting with other program areas.

As our Waterfront Unit Lead Steward, you will be a part of our summer leadership support staff - STEWARDS, which stands for staff team ensuring we all receive direct support. Our Waterfront Lead Stew will help support the work we do at the YMCA by helping create a positive, nurturing environment for all our campers and staff. They will also help each camper and staff reach their fullest potential and deepen their connections as part of their overall camp experience. Enjoy spending time on/in the water? Have great ideas for waterfront programming? The Waterfront Coordinator provides leadership, direction, and supervision to program participants in all aquatic areas. It is required you maintain safe swimming conditions in the lake, waterfront, and surrounding areas.

Compensation and Amenities:

  • Starting Pay: $400 per week.
  • Additional compensation for specialized certifications (i.e., Lifeguards, Ropes, and more).
  • Housing is provided for the summer.
  • Camp Shirts are provided.

  • All training certification costs and time are paid for.
  • Free laundry facilities.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of college/trade school or previous experience working with children, preferably in an overnight camp setting.
  • Experience working with youth and supervising staff.
  • Must complete Online Training prior to arrival at Camp.
  • Certifications: CPR, AED & First Aid. YMCA Lifeguarding or American Red Cross certified.
  • Strong desire to work with children in the outdoors.
  • Must be able to self-regulate your emotions in a fast-paced community environment.
  • A commitment to working with a diverse staff and camper population.
  • Enthusiastic, engaged, and professional personality.
  • Flexible approach to working hours and responsibilities.
  • Ability to follow instructions and schedules.
  • Experience preferred in at least two or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, canoeing, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  • Previous summer camp experience as a lifeguard or waterfront preferred.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
