Responsibilities

  • Analysis and design of waterfront structures and maritime projects.
  • Structural analysis and design of marine structures including piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, offshore platforms, and more.
  • Design using timber, structural steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, aluminum, and composites.
  • Assist in development of plans, specifications, calculations, and reports.
  • Field investigations or inspections and coordination of design aspects.
  • Work with multi-discipline teams on projects.
  • Perform site and office inspections and prepare inspection reports.
  • Office construction administration including review of shop drawings and submittals.
  • Perform construction site inspections and prepare inspection reports.

Waterfront Structural Engineering Internship - Summer 2027

Temporary Full-Time Interns Federal Way, WA, US

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Structural Intern to join our Seattle or Federal Way office. The Structural Intern is an entry-level, temporary student role that supports project teams in a technical discipline such as engineering, planning, simulation, software development, CAD/BIM, or science. The intern produces basic drawings, models, calculations, data sets, or code that support project deliverables while learning core tools, standards, and workflows. Work is performed under direct supervision with detailed instructions, is reviewed before use, and has limited downstream impact. This is an individual-contributor role with no direct reports.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analysis and design of waterfront structures, inspection of waterfront structures, and other maritime project tasks
  • Structural analysis and design of marine structures, including but not limited to piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, offshore platforms, mooring and berthing dolphins, catwalks, utility support structures, drainage structures, retaining walls, towers, and structural foundations.
  • Design using timber, structural steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, aluminum, and composite materials
  • Assist in the development of plans, specifications, calculations, and reports as needed
  • Help resolve design problems that may include performing field investigation or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project
  • Work closely with other architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, etc. on multi-discipline projects
  • Perform structural site inspections and prepare inspection reports
  • Office construction administration including review of shop drawings and technical submittals
  • Perform construction site inspections and prepare inspection reports

Qualifications:
  • Must be in pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a Structural emphasis
    • Must be entering the final year of a qualified Bachelor’s degree program following the summer of employment
    • A Master’s degree student is preferred
  • Must have completed the following coursework
    • Engineering Materials
    • Structural Analysis
    • At least one material design course (reinforced concrete or structural steel)
  • Must have working towards, or already have (preferred), an EIT certification
  • At least one previous related internship is preferred, but not required
  • Ability to perform field investigations is preferred
  • Preferred experience using the following software:
    • AutoCAD
    • SAP2000
    • LPile
    • Mathcad
    • Bluebeam
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation)
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
  • Moffatt & Nichol uses E-Verify and employment is contingent upon the legal ability to obtain employment in the U.S. and to present the required documentation at hire
Working Conditions:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.

Base Salary Range:

$28.00 to $36.00 per hour based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications in the job description.

Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the Washington market.
