Job description

Vacancy Information:

The Sewer Operations Division is seeking qualified candidates for the Water Utility Mechanic III position, requiring:

  • CWEA Collection System Maintenance Operator Grade I or higher
  • California Water Distribution Operator Grade II or higher

Salary Range:

  • Grade I: $28.021 – $38.295/hour
  • Grade II: $29.021 – $40.239/hour
  • Grade III: $35.623 – $48.326/hour

Job Responsibilities:

Performs heavy manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work in installation, maintenance, construction, operation, modification, repair, and testing of water and sewer systems; operates various tools and equipment; inspects sewer lines using CCTV; maintains and repairs system facilities; responds to emergency calls; and performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet either Option A or Option B:

  1. Option A: One year of full-time experience in water/sewer pipeline work, maintenance, or related fields.
  2. Option B: Two years of full-time experience in construction, mechanical repair, or related trades.

Substitutions for experience include certifications or coursework as specified. Proof of qualifications must be uploaded with the application.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of water/sewer systems, safety practices, and construction procedures.
  • Skilled in operation of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to inspect sites, follow instructions, respond to emergencies, operate vehicles, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to lift up to 90 pounds and obtain necessary licenses.
Additional Requirements:

Valid driver’s license, Class B CDL with tanker endorsement before probation completion, and the ability to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes.

Desirable Qualifications:

Current water or sewer maintenance certifications issued by CWEA or California Department of Public Health.

Examination Process:

Application review and written exam, with a passing score of 70. Veterans may receive additional scoring points. The eligible list is valid for one year.
