Water Utilities Maintenance Technician I

Salary: $42,431.01 - $61,526.40 per annum ($20.39 - $29.58 hourly). Position #9931 (W1).

Water Utilities Technician II

Salary: $44,977.43 - $65,218.80 per annum ($21.62 - $31.35 hourly). Position #9932 (W2).

Water Utilities Technician III

Salary: $47,676.50 - $69,132.54 per annum ($22.92 - $33.23 hourly). Position #9933 (W3).

Water Utilities Technician IV

Salary: $50,537.36 - $73,280.88 per annum ($24.29 - $35.23 hourly). Position #9934 (W4).

Summary of Position

Under general supervision, performs technical tasks in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection system. Employees in this classification perform technical, manual work. The position is responsible for repairing water leaks, repairing and installing sewer and water mains, and operates and maintains moderate to complex equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducts basic supervised water inspection, installation and repair of water mains, water services, water meters, hydrants, and valves.
  • Assists preparing work areas and securing job sites by setting up cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices.
  • Assists in preparing tools, materials, and equipment necessary for various job assignments.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and tools by cleaning and servicing regularly.
  • Flushes hydrants.
  • Tracks water loss.
  • Identifies basic common water parts.
  • Locally exercises valves and operates valve turner.
  • Conducts safety inspections and completes check-off sheets and equipment.
  • Serves on callout crew, as needed.

  • Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, interpret decimals, percentages, fractions, and graphs.
  • Requires the ability to execute written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions with some independent judgment.
  • Requires the ability to exercise judgment in repetitive or short-cycle operations.
  • Requires the ability to perform coordinated movements involving placement and turning motions, such as operating a backhoe, Hydro-Excavator, dump truck and trailer, front-end loader, air compressor, gas and electrical pumps, and various hand tools.
  • Ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers, subordinates, and customers with respect.
  • Build professional relationships with internal staff and customers.
  • Offer flexibility and adaptability, especially during times of change.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by previous experience and/or training involving water construction, maintenance and repair work, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license or the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of employment.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must have Class C Texas Driver’s License.
  • Must obtain the National Incident Management System (NIMS) certificate IS-100 and IS-700 within 6 months of employment.
  • During storms or natural disasters, staff will be divided into two 12-hour shifts and may be called in while on vacation.
Physical Demands

Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderate to heavy objects (20–50 pounds) and occasionally up to 150 pounds. Some tasks require visual and odor perception and discrimination.

Work Environment

Limited exposure to environmental conditions. Tasks may require exposure to strong odors, smoke, traffic hazards, extreme heat or cold, or extreme weather conditions.
