General Definition of Work

Are you passionate about ensuring the safety and quality of our community's water supply? Two Rivers Utilities, a subsidiary of the City of Gastonia, is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Water Treatment Plant Operator to join our team. In this vital role, you will be at the forefront of maintaining and operating our state-of-the-art water treatment facilities, ensuring that every drop of water meets the highest standards for our residents.

As a Water Treatment Plant Operator, you'll have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology, collaborate with a skilled team of professionals, and play a crucial part in protecting public health and the environment. Principle areas of work include Raw Water Supply, Process Control, Laboratory and Quality Control, Distribution Supply, and Facility and Operation Security. Work is performed under the supervision of the Water Quality Supervisor.

Essential Functions/Duties
  1. Raw Water Supply: Assists with load management strategies to minimize power costs; monitors pump changes and valve operations; uses SCADA system to monitor equipment; collects water samples; performs other tasks as required.
  2. Process Control: Monitors pumps, motors, chlorinators, filters, mixers, chemical feeders; records data; assists with chemical inventory; backwashes filters; performs routine maintenance and security checks; participates in plant maintenance projects.
  3. Laboratory and Quality Control: Conducts physical and chemical tests; monitors turbidity; enters lab data; assists with pump and valve monitoring; performs additional tasks as needed.
  4. Distribution Supply: Monitors pump and tank levels; assists with SCADA operations; performs routine tasks.
  5. Facility and Operations Security: Monitors security systems; performs security checks; analyzes raw water for threats; performs other security-related tasks.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry, math, and physics.
  • Understanding of water treatment principles and equipment.
  • Awareness of safety procedures and hazards.
  • Ability to wear protective gear and follow technical instructions.
  • Ability to operate plant equipment and perform analytical tests.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Education/Experience/Physical Demands/Special Requirements

Operator I: High school diploma; ability to obtain Grade "C-Surface" certification within 1 year; starting pay $22.39/hr.

Operator II: High school diploma; 1.5-2 years' experience; Grade "B-Surface" certification; starting pay $24.68/hr.

Operator III: High school diploma; 1.5-4 years' experience; Grade "A-Surface" certification; starting pay $27.21/hr.

Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Complete NIMS 700 training within 12 months.
  • Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Work involves medium physical effort.
  • Visual acuity for data analysis, inspection, and measurement tasks.
  • Work environment includes inside/outside conditions, noise, hazards, and possible chemical exposure.
  • Drug screening, background checks required.
