Job summary

City of Bartow, FL seeks a skilled operator to run and maintain the municipal potable water treatment plant on a rotating shift, including nights, weekends and holidays. The role requires careful monitoring of plant processes, recording data, and ensuring compliance with health regulations.

This position involves working independently within a system of pumps, tanks and SCADA, with opportunities for advancement from Operator II to Operator IV based on licenses and experience.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of normal operating principles of water treatment processes.
• Ability to perform basic laboratory analysis of water.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices applied to the operation and light maintenance of pumps and similar machinery.
• Knowledge of safety regulations, occupational hazards, precautions, and the promotion of safety.
• Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in a water plant.
• Ability to efficiently and safely operate all equipment and machinery used in water plant operations.
• Ability to troubleshoot problems of various water treatment processes and equipment.
• Ability to learn basic computer skills necessary to operate various computer-controlled systems.
• Ability to prepare written and oral reports.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public.

Responsibilities

• Provides safe, aesthetically pleasing drinking water to system customers in strict accordance with Federal, State, and local Health Department regulations.
• Inspects motors, bearing, and gear boxes for overheating and proper lubrication.
• Collects samples of water at various stages of processing, performs lab tests on same, and records data collected.
• Maintains equipment, process tanks, buildings, and grounds in a clean and orderly manner.
• Performs mathematical calculations on collected data; calibrates process control equipment; enters collected data into computer database.
• Assist in interact with customers with water quality concerns
• Monitors and/or inspects numerous process control parameters for proper operation.
• Works in confined spaces or hazardous areas.
• Lifts medium - heavy objects and climbs ladders and stairs.
• May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
• Assists in monitoring Plant SCADA system
• Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
• Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy
• Position is designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
