Job Description: Water Technician - City of Wauwatosa

If you are dependable, team-oriented, communicate well, and enjoy outdoor work, consider the Water Technician position with the City of Wauwatosa Water Utility. The Water Technician performs duties related to the operation and maintenance of the water infrastructure system, including repairing water mains and maintaining valves, hydrants, and meters throughout the city. Assistance with water pumping stations and storage tanks may also be required. No prior experience is necessary for our Water Technician I position.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary ranges from $26.24 to $33.61 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Advancement to the top of the range, up to $38.65 for Water Technician II, is performance-based. This position can be filled at the I or II level based on experience and qualifications.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with paid lunch. Some overtime may be required, mainly during winter.

Responsibilities
  • Work as part of a maintenance crew or independently to construct, repair, and maintain the water distribution system.
  • Operate various municipal vehicles and equipment, including leak locators, line locators, valves, pumps, generators, and hand tools.
  • Report, repair, and replace defective water mains, service laterals, valves, boxes, and hydrants.
  • Flush the water distribution system.
  • Assist with Diggers Hotline locates as needed.
  • Install, read, and replace water meters; check for cross connections.
  • Maintain work activity reports and update utility records.
  • Investigate customer complaints.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform heavy manual and outdoor labor in various weather conditions.
  • Safely perform confined space entry and trench work.
  • Perform other public works duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
  • Class B CDL must be obtained within one year of employment (may be extended depending on training resources).
  • Physical stamina for heavy manual labor outdoors in variable weather.
  • Ability to respond to emergency overtime.
  • Basic computer and math skills.
  • Adequate mechanical aptitude.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Wisconsin Class B CDL preferred at hire.
  • Two years of experience with manual/semi-skilled tasks and operation of heavy/medium trucks.
  • Experience in trades such as carpentry, plumbing, or electrical.
  • Previous water utility experience.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and piping preferred.
  • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Operator Certification in Distribution preferred.
Physical and Work Environment

Must frequently handle tools and materials, stand, walk, climb, and work in confined spaces. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly, 50 pounds frequently, and 80 pounds occasionally. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, often for long hours. Moderate noise levels are typical.
