Job summary

Brown and Caldwell, headquartered in Walnut Creek, CA, seeks a senior engineer to advance our technical services in water infrastructure projects for public-sector clients. You will lead hydraulic modeling efforts, calibrate models, and prepare technical reports while collaborating with internal teams and stakeholders.

Ideal candidates have 10+ years in hydraulic modeling, a CA PE license or plan to obtain within 2 years, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lead drinking water modeling using InfoWater Pro, WaterGEMS, AquaTwin for distribution systems.
• Perform model calibration using measured data.
• Analyze complex drinking water systems and identify improvement needs.
• Prepare technical reports detailing model development, calibration, and recommendations.

Job description

In this role, you will work closely with our technical experts, local leaders, and client service managers to advance our technical services and support business development on a wide variety of projects for primarily public sector clients.

Typical Projects

• Creating master plans for municipal water utilities
• Updating or creating and executing a variety of hydraulic models and evaluating model results for planning and design projects
• Preparing feasibility studies, alternative analyses, and conceptual design development for water infrastructure improvement projects
• Assisting with water supply studies and alternatives analysis

You will have the opportunity to quickly take on more advanced roles and responsibilities as you develop your internal network and expand your abilities.

Responsibilities

• Utilize advanced knowledge on how surface water infrastructure, stormwater systems, water distribution systems, and/or wastewater collection systems operate and the facilities in each system.
• Lead drinking water modeling efforts using commercially available modeling software such as InfoWater Pro, WaterGEMS, AquaTwin Water for water distribution systems.
• Perform flow monitoring or advanced field testing to collect data for model calibration.
• Lead calibration of models using measured or observed data.
• Perform complex analysis of drinking water using models to identify deficiencies for existing conditions and future scenarios.
• Prepare and analyze technical reports detailing model development, calibration, analysis, and recommended improvements.
• Provide advanced technical support on design projects by modeling and validating facility sizing and system performance.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to communicate findings.
• Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Preferred Requirements

• Analyze and manipulate data using spreadsheets, GIS, and other software tools
• Travel occasionally to project sites for data collection and client meetings
• Prepare figures and maps for reports and presentations
• Write letters and otherwise communicate with clients and the public
• Prepare budget level project cost estimates
• Coordinate, manage, and execute complex assignments to achieve client goals within scope, schedule, and budget constraints
• Participate in improving company resources and tools to improve quality and efficiency
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Mentorship

• Provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.

Skills and Competencies

• Advanced understanding of hydrologic and/or hydraulic principles and methods used to evaluate systems and facilities.
• Advanced proficiency in modeling software, data analysis, and/or GIS tools (ArcGIS Pro).
• Ability to lead field testing programs and/or perform complex system analyses.
• Strong technical writing and presentation skills for internal and external audiences.
• Capable of mentoring staff and contributing to project planning.

Experience

• Typically, a minimum of 10 years of related work experience in hydraulic modeling or related field.

Preferred Experience

• Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering; Master's degree preferred
• California PE license or ability to obtain PE within 2 years
• Working knowledge of water and sewer infrastructure hydraulics and operation
• Ability to work as a member of a team
• 3 to 5 years of directly-related experience in water hydraulic modeling and planning, with progressively increasing responsibility
• Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to prepare effective written documents
• Proficiency with advanced modeling, data management, and related software packages a plus (e.g., InfoWater, WaterGEMS, Aquanuity , Excel,)
• Organizational and analytical skills with high attention to detail

Education

• A bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, or related field or equivalent experience is required.
• Has achieved or is working towards achieving professional license.

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location B: $128,000 - $175,000
Location C: $140,000 - $191,000
