Job summary

The City and County of Honolulu's Honolulu Board of Water Supply is seeking a Water Systems Operator I to operate and monitor pumping stations and distribution equipment from the island-wide control center. You will ensure proper water flow, pressure, and reservoir levels while maintaining logs and responding to service interruptions.

Responsibilities include minor maintenance on pumps, motors, piping, and valves, plus support for preventive maintenance and purification equipment

Qualifications

  • Experience operating pumping plant and related industrial equipment.
  • Ability to read meters/gauges and record readings accurately.
  • Familiarity with remote monitoring and control systems.

Help keep Oahu's water flowing safely and reliably!

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS), Water System Operations, Plant Operations Branch, is seeking a Water Systems Operator I in Honolulu. Working from the control center for the island-wide water system, you will operate and monitor pumping stations and distribution equipment to maintain water flow, water pressure, and reservoir levels.

What You'll Do
  • Operate electrically powered water pumping stations, auxiliary equipment, and distribution system equipment using remote monitoring and control systems.
  • Monitor meters, gauges, and other instruments to maintain proper water flow, water pressure, and reservoir levels.
  • Operate primary and booster pumping units to support the island-wide water distribution system.
  • Maintain operating logs and record readings from gauges and meters.
  • Receive and record calls concerning service interruptions and other departmental matters.
  • Perform minor maintenance on pumps, motors, piping, valves, and other equipment.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of purification equipment.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of station facilities and equipment.
Special Working Conditions
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday
  • Rotating shift work
  • Working around heavy machinery, moving machinery, and high-voltage electricity

Experience Requirement

Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey-level skills and duties of this position, or which show equivalent competence in the operation of pumping plant, power plant, marine engine room, or related industrial-type equipment.

Competencies and Skills Needed

Knowledge of:

  • Practices and procedures used in the operation of pumping plant equipment;
  • Types and functions of machinery and equipment used in a pumping station;
  • Principles and practices of elementary electricity and hydraulics; and
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.

Ability to:

  • Operate electrical pumping units, auxiliary equipment and distribution system equipment;
  • Read meters and gauges, record readings and prepare and keep operational records;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions; and
  • Work with dexterity and safety.
License Requirement
