Job summary

City of Pittsfield is seeking a Water/Sewer Maintenance Laborer to join the Department of Public Utilities. This full-time, non-exempt role supports infrastructure upkeep, seasonal hydrant work, and coordination with construction crews across water and sewer systems in Pittsfield.

The position requires a high school diploma (or equivalent), 2 years of relevant labor experience, and a valid Class D driver’s license; routine outdoor work and potential emergency calls are expected.

Qualifications

• Must be eighteen years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years acceptable experience in construction and or related labor fields
• Valid Class D driver's license
• Ability to interact with people on an up-beat and friendly basis regardless of circumstances.

Responsibilities

• Maintain access points to water and sewer infrastructure including sewer siphons, water tanks, reservoirs, pump/lift stations; perform mowing, brush cutting, down tree removal, plow/sand, drainage maintenance.
• Assist construction crews with water, sewer, and drain system repairs.
• Assist with hydrant flushing and seasonal hydrant painting.
• Assist with sewer and drainage structure replacements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of the Water/Sewer Maintenance Laborer, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. Incumbent will be required to be available to respond to emergencies on a 24 hour a day basis.

Physical Requirements

Ability to climb ladders and enter utility holes, access ways & underground vaults, walk long distances over uneven terrain, lift 50 lbs. from ground to chest height in a standing position, and work outdoors during all seasons.

HOURS

Monday – Friday, 7:00AM – 3:30PM (Incumbent shall be required to work any time during the 24 hour day to respond to weather related/emergency needs)

SALARY

Starting rate $21.54 per hour

Annual increases up to $29.81 per hour
