Job summary

City of Harker Heights is seeking a skilled worker to perform construction, repair, and maintenance on sewer and water lines. You will operate equipment, read meters, and assist with line installations and repairs under supervision.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, a Texas CDL within six months, and water distribution certifications within the stated timelines. Six months of related construction experience is required.

Responsibilities

• Operate jackhammer, lawn mower, power saw, tapping machine, chain saw, hand tools, light trucks.
• Assist in installing water and sewer lines and repairing mains and manholes.
• Enter confined spaces for maintenance as needed.
• Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
• Read meters and perform meter accuracy tests; install and reset meters.
• Load/unload materials and stock the truck; maintain yard cleanliness.

Job description

Performs construction, repair, and maintenance work on sewer and water lines; operates equipment and performs extensive manual labor; reads meters; performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Work is performed under the general supervision of the crew leader or the on-site supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

1. Operates a jackhammer, lawn mower, power saw, tapping machine, chain saw, hand tools, light trucks, and assist with sewer cleaning machine.
2. Assists in installing water and sewer lines; repairs wastewater main and manholes; enters confined spaces (i.e. sewer or manholes) to do maintenance.
3. Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
4. Performs meter accuracy tests on customers’ meters.
5. Installs and resets meters.
6. Replaces meter boxes.
7. Reads customer service meters.
8. Loads and downloads hand-held meter devices.
9. Turns meters on/off.
10. Performs minor painting, plumbing, and maintenance.
11. Cleans and stocks the truck.
12. Loads and unloads various materials; performs yard clean-up and all other duties assigned.
13. Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of the job.

High school diploma or GED; must be able to obtain Texas CDL Driver’s License within six (6) months from date of hire; must be able to obtain a Texas “D” Water Distribution and Collections I Certification within one (1) year from date of hire, and must be able to obtain a Texas "C" Water Distribution Certification with three (3) years from date of hire.

A minimum of six (6) months experience in performing construction work requiring the use of equipment similar to or the same as assigned to this position.
