Job description

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR TRAINER - PART-TIME
OLIVE-HARVEY COLLEGE
Continuing Education Department of Aquatics

Olive-Harvey College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, is seeking experienced Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) educators with sound knowledge of the American Red Cross (ARC) Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) courses. The BSI/WSI Trainer will offer face-to-face and/or blended online ARC BSI and/or WSI courses to train instructor candidates who have successfully demonstrated the course prerequisites at a level consistent with the desired ARC certification. The WSIT will evaluate and offer appropriate teaching techniques, swim skills, water safety rules, and lesson plans to instructor candidates to teach group and/or private Learn-to-Swim lessons to participants of varying ages and skill levels. This position serves to inspire, motivate, and empower individuals of all skill levels to learn in an environment that is safe and comfortable to accomplish educational goals.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adhere to the American Red Cross Instructor Development Training Program.
  • Evaluate each instructor candidate's skill performance to ensure competency and consistency with the level performance chart of anticipated ARC certification.
  • Teach aquatic safety in, on, and around water and drowning prevention.
  • Integrate industry research and best practices into the swimming and water safety program.
  • Help instructor candidates improve their teaching skills to better assess swimming participants of varying ages and aquatic abilities.
  • Educate instructor candidates on the resources available for water safety programs.
  • Monitor instructor candidates to prevent accidents or potential injuries.
  • Recognize and respond swiftly and efficiently to all aquatic emergencies.
  • Complete necessary training reports, aquatic daily reports, and/or incident forms.
  • Must remain current with ARC basic and advanced certifications.
  • Maintain a clean and safe aquatic facility.
  • Effectively work as a team with other aquatic instructors, lifeguards, facilities, and management.
  • Participate in in-service training.
  • Flexibility to work early morning, day, evening, and/or weekend hours as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • American Red Cross Certification: Water Safety Instructor.
  • American Red Cross Certification: First Aid, and CPR with AED.
  • American Red Cross Certification: Water Safety Instructor Trainer.
  • Pre-employment aquatic skills assessment (ARC Level 4).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Sport & Recreation Management or related field.
  • American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard (LGI / LGIT).

*Current, verifiable, and in good standing with American Red Cross.
