Job summary

Monarch Recreation Center is seeking a part-time swim instructor to teach a range of programs, including group and private lessons, while supporting school-year activities.

The role requires evenings, weekends, and a flexible schedule, with responsibilities spanning lesson planning, safety, progress tracking, and coordination with staff to ensure quality instruction and safe aquatic environments.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 15 years old and enrolled in high school or have completed high school/GED.
• Experience working with children or teaching in a group setting.
• American Red Cross WSI Certification or ability to obtain prior to program start; CPR/AED and First Aid required or able to obtain within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Instruct swim lessons and water safety classes across programs and schedules.
• Develop and implement daily lesson plans aligned with program standards.
• Instruct participants in proper swimming techniques, water safety, and aquatic confidence.
• Monitor participant progress and provide feedback to improve performance.
• Adapt instruction to varying skill levels and learning styles.
• Ensure safe use of facilities, equipment, and program areas.
• Communicate with participants, parents, and staff regarding progress and expectations.
• Maintain attendance, progress, and required report records.
• Discuss students' progress with parents.
• Assist with setup, organization, and breakdown of instructional areas and equipment.
• Support aquatics programs, events, and activities as needed.
• Clean program areas at end of activities and day.
• Attend scheduled in-service training.
• Coordinate with aquatics staff to ensure consistent program delivery and safety.

Part-time, year-round position responsible for teaching swim lessons and supporting aquatics programming at the Monarch Recreation Center. This position delivers instruction across a wide range of programs, including group lessons, private instruction, school-year programming, and special events. Instructions may take place in multiple aquatic environments, including indoor and outdoor pools and specialized water features. This role requires a flexible schedule to support programming during evenings, weekends, and throughout the school year.

Formal Education:

Must be at least 15 years of age and currently enrolled in high school or have completed high school/GED.

Relatable Work Experience:

Experience working with children or teaching in a group setting. Candidates must be comfortable in the water and demonstrate the ability to swim proficiently.

Training, Licenses, and Certifications:

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification or ability to obtain prior to program start. CPR/AED and First Aid Certification required, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching swim lessons or aquatic programs. Swim team or swim lessons experience. Experience working in high-volume aquatics environments.

Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
