Job summary

Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is seeking incumbents to assist in sampling and monitoring of drinking water and wastewater in the distribution system. Responsibilities include transporting samples, activating new lines, and performing flushing and flow tests.

Position requires a high school diploma or GED, six months in water quality or related field, and NC driver’s license; on-call rotation with 30-minute response time is required.

Responsibilities

• Obtain samples of drinking water and wastewater per procedures.

• Sample new lines for activation and activate new lines.
• Conduct flow tests, pressure surveys, and annual flushing program.
• Collect GPS data using the Trimble GPS device.
• Assist with emergency/distribution work and restoration activities.
• Investigate customer concerns by collecting samples and reporting results.
• Maintain detailed records of investigations and maintenance tasks.
• Direct flow during flushing to contain and flush contaminants.
• Assist construction crews with disinfection of new mains.

Job description

Incumbents in this position are responsible for assisting in the collection of samples and the monitoring of public drinking water and wastewater for Cape Fear Public Utility Authority. This position is assigned to pay grade G13.

• Obtains samples of the drinking water and wastewater in the distribution/collection system in strict accordance with established monitoring procedures.
• Transports samples to the lab for testing for state compliance and for special projects.
• Samples new lines for activation and activates new lines.
• Conducts flow tests, pressure surveys, and an annual flushing program.
• Collects GPS data utilizing the Trimble GPS device.
• Disables water main for emergencies or for work on distribution system, restores water, flushes lines, and collects sample for analysis after restoring water to customers.
• Assists with investigating customer complaints by collecting samples, reporting findings to the supervisor, and recommending appropriate action to remedy customer concerns.
• Maintains detailed records of investigations and maintenance assignments.
• Directs the path of contaminated water flow during system flushing by following directions from a supervisoror system ORC.
• Chooses the appropriate hydrant and/or valve in order to ensure water quality during scheduled maintenance and emergency repair so as to contain and properly flush any water contaminants.
• Assists with providing instructions to construction crews in disinfecting newly installed water mains through appropriate use of chlorine, flow direction, and discharges into the collection system.
• Using GIS and CAD maps, blueprints and knowledge of the distribution system configuration in order to locate problem areas for implementation of flushing programs and notifies supervisor of any mapping inaccuracies.
• Responds to emergency and other operation situations.
• Performs preventive maintenance on equipment as directed.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.
