Jefferson Parish is seeking an entry-level Water Plant Operator to fill future vacancies in the Water Department. The role involves operating and monitoring a Water Purification Plant, managing equipment and hazardous materials, and requires a Class I Water Treatment License. Candidates with relevant education and experience will be preferred.
EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL FUTURE EAST AND WEST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE WATER DEPARTMENT AS THEY OCCUR.
Entry level position involving the operation of Water Purification Plant and minor mechanical/maintenance for various types of equipment and processes used in a major Water purification Plant. Operator must operate and/or monitor computers, pumps, motors, tanks, chemical feeders, levels, pressures, analyzers, and related equipment to ensure the proper operation of the Purification Plant. Must handle hazardous chemicals used in the Water Treatment process such as chlorine and ammonia. Operator must be able to handle customer calls and dispatch maintenance crew for repairs.
This class of work requires that all operators work on a rotating shift basis. This position is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or his designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
Note: Employee will be required to obtain Class IV Water Treatment and Production certification from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospital within the 6 years of initial employment.
Possession of a Class I Water Treatment License issued by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Plus one of the following:
PREFERRED: Preference will be given to candidates with college coursework from an accredited college or university and/or experience in working in a Water Treatment Plant based upon the quantity of coursework and the length and quality of the work experience.
Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification and the Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of education and experience claimed for credit.
